The Sonics
A rock & roll band from Tacoma, WA, the Sonics' original members were Gerry Roslie (lead singer, piano, organ), Andy Parypa (guitar), Larry Parypa (bass), Bob Bennett (drums), and Rob Lind (saxophone). Forming in the wake of the early-'60s success of local favorites the Kingsmen and the Wailers (whose Etiquette label they recorded for), the Sonics combined classic Northwest-area teen band raunch with early English band grit (particularly influenced by the Kinks), relentless rhythmic drive, and unabashed '50s-style blues shouting for a combin...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. "The Sonics - fronted by Gerry Roslie's banshee vocals - blow-torched the mists of Seattle in 1966 like the fiery exhaust from a jumbo-jet. With their trademark scorched-earth guitar sounds, they created a mind- numbing assortment of Sonics' classics: 'You Got Your Head On Backwards,' 'Like No Other Man,' 'Psycho,' 'The Witch' and simultaneously reinvented garage rock powerhouses like 'I'm A Man,' 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and much more. This heavy-duty BeatRocket vinyl edition of the group's 1966 Jer [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. The Sonics' second album is every bit as explosive and influential as their debut outing, loaded with gritty Northwest rock & roll. Sandwiched in between the abrasive classics of "Cinderella" and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (with the Wailers on backing vocals), the funk sass of "The Hustler" and "Shot Down," the demonic "He's Waitin'," and the sledgehammer, inside-out version of "Louie, Louie" (only three chords to play and they don't even play 'em) are the band's straight-ahead takes on old [ read more ]

Despite a title implying a debut album, this was actually the Sonics' third and final LP (at least in terms of what they issued while they were still together). The record showed the band progressing in that they were writing most of their own material and adapting a somewhat more contemporary 1960s garage rock sound than their previous records had boasted, without as much of a '50s R&B base to their approach. As fierce as their pounding arrangements were, however, the songs -- centered as they wer [ read more ]

Everyone would agree that the Sonics reached their peak on their 1964-65 recordings for Etiquette. This 29-track compilation has everything they recorded for the label, extended not just to everything from their singles and two albums, but also with an alternate take of "The Witch" and live recordings of "Psycho" and "The Witch." Consequently, it's the best Sonics release on the market, though you should be warned: it's not wall-to-wall greatness. After the first half-dozen or so songs, yo [ read more ]

Fifteen sides cut by the Sonics, two at their very first recording session for Etiquette Records circa late 1964, and 13 from the last session by the original lineup two years later. Originally mastered in binaural stereo, they've all been remixed here into glorious, raw mono, with the texture (and finesse) of a buzz saw. Opening with their debut Jerden single "The Witch" (which managed to chart locally in Orlando, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco without once rating a mention on the national chart [ read more ]
