Six years is, to quote Mott The Hoople, "a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll". Though it might only feel like yesterday that The Vines ram-raided their way into the public consciousness, 2008 finds them releasing their fourth album Melodia. It greets the world with the kind of blinking, wide eyed enthusiasm of a band just out of the garage. The real story, though, is of a band who have experienced an accelerated career lived out very publicly in a whirlwind of brilliant pop records, legendary gigs and grueling world tours, breakdowns, break ups and the occasional fug of spliff smoke, enough to make lesser mortals run for the hills, never to return to the frontline.

And so onto 2008. No one really had the right to expect to find The Vines in such rude health, but with their fourth album, the band are ready to drop back in where they started. The record, recorded with Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) in LA, sees the band pushing themselves to the polar extremes of their sound - pummeling, speedball fired demento rock amped up to the Nth degree while bucolic pop is allowed to tranq out into classically beautiful lazy day territory. Twisted psychedelia? Pure unadulterated gonzoid rock 'n' roll?

All in all it's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll from the Liverpool Docks to the Hollywood Bowl. The next stage of The Vines career begins here and it's a safe bet to say that anything goes. In fact, based on the last six years, it's possibly best not to assume anything other than it's going to be a hell of a ride.

User Reviews

Yo Yo - Danville, OH, US
This album is amazing. Craig has really nailed it. Their are intense rockers like Briandead and Scream and of course melodic beautiful songs such as A.S. 3 and A Girl I Knew. This album is a must have and way different from his others, just like all the rest are different from each other but all great. Craig is a genuis!

   Danny - Manchester, , England
This is a great album, returning to the form of debut Highly Evolved (although I still think their other two albums were great). Great mix of hard rockers and soft, beautiful acoustic tunes. Stand-out songs: "A Girl I Knew", "Braindead", "Manger", "Hey", "MerryGoRound"

Peter Griffin - Quahog, RI, USA
This is a good attempt.

"Get Out" is a very good opener and reminiscent to early Vines songs. "True of the Night", "Orange Amber" and "A.S. III" showcase Nichols talent for song writing.

Jonny Blue - Sacramento, CA, United States
The Vines have had long and difficult careers as mucisians but one thing that has stayed consistent throughout the band's time in the spotlight is their ability to make spectacular music.
