The Warlocks
Indeed, it's been a long strange trip for Warlocks leader Bobby Hecksher since his band played their first gig on July 4th, 1998. Hecksher, who moved to California from Florida in the late '80s, formed his first group shortly after arriving. Charles Brown Superstar issued two singles and two full-length albums before calling it a day. Hecksher was later invited to play on Beck's Stereo Pathetic Soul Manure (Flipside), then -- along with James Ambrose -- formed Magic Pacer, who waxed two albums for Win Records before Hecksher splintered off to d...[more]

FULL LENGTH ALBUM. The Warlocks have been making a name for themselves for several years with their own brand of psychedelic rock -- a swirling grind that conjures the Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Spaceman 3, Neu!, Can, and early Pink Floyd. They deliver the sounds and sights from their powerful, hallucinatory world that these synthetic times need and would do well not to ignore. At the vortex of The Warlocks' cross-fire hurricane -- two drummers, four guitarists, bass and keyboards -- is guitarist/bass [ read more ]

Surgery sees the band return with a more dynamic, almost accessible pop sound and its twelve songs are without doubt their most ambitious and infectious to date. An otherworldly, subversive soul record it has a ghostly grace which mixes soothing sci-fi lullabies such as 'Gypsy Nightmare' and the gorgeous doo-wop of 'Angels In Heaven, Angels in Hell'' with their trademark characteristic rohypnol rock-outs. There's the intensity of 'Suicide', the black humoured nod to illness on 'The Tangent' ("I got s [ read more ]

Four guitarists, two drummers, a bassist, and a tambourine jam on repetitive riffs and rhythms to amass a wall of white noise that shoots directly to your reptilian brain. Bobby Hecksher's Warlocks continue a musical trajectory that he began while working with Beck in his early days and then with the Rolling Stones-worshipping Brian Jonestown Massacre. "Cocaine Blues" is the standout on the wholly brilliant EP The Warlocks. Its intricately woven guitar lines twist under {$Bobby Hecksher [ read more ]

The psychedelic-drenched Los Angeles group's underlying modus operandi is to "conjure up music as an experience." Both live and recorded, lead vocalist/guitarist Bobby Hecksher -- along with a six- to eight-member entourage -- transform jams into something tangible, much like avant-garde Suicide and space rockers Spiritualized have been known to do. The five-song mini-album almost merits full-length status, as it clocks over an hour in length. The seven-minute "Stone Hearts" is the most me [ read more ]
