The personal remains the political whichever way you want to cut it. Winnipeg's Weakerthans embody this ethic better than most on their second and long-awaited follow-up to their 1998 debut, Fallow. Splitting from Winnipeg's more punk Propagandhi, John Samson is following a more melodic and introspective path while retaining much of the politics. Constructed of vignettes of precise moments in time and place which manage nonetheless to speak volumes, Left and Leaving deftly mixes social com [ read more ]

The Weakerthans hold deep roots in the indie scene with literary lyrics that could stand alongside a Raymond Carver or Russell Banks short story, and music that channels the spirit of punk, alt-country, barroom rock, and folk, this band is set to build on the critical acclaim that greeted 2003's Reconstruction Site with a sound that bands like Bright Eyes and Wilco are finally bringing into the top 10.

Even though the Weakerthans feature bassist extraordinaire John K. Samson (formerly of Propaghandi), there is no way this could even come close to a musical comparison with his former band. Lyrically, Samson's pen has a sharp, poetic tone, making it impossible for one not to be taken into his stories. Just imagine Jawbreaker meeting the Smoking Popes, but with a relaxed en [ read more ]

The title of the Weakerthans' third full-length album is appropriate, because 'Reconstruction Site' is a great way to describe the most defined document yet of singer, principal songwriter, and guitarist John Samson's trajectory from the punk rock of Propagandhi to the Weakerthans' quietly determined indie pop. While his former group was as concerned with social change as it was with a lockstep drum beat, Samson's recent work has traded power-chord fury for the slow-burning -- but no less hot -- embers of f [ read more ]
