The Wedding Present

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Emerging in the wake of the Smiths' demise as the U.K.'s most successful indie pop band during the late '80s, the Wedding Present were founded in Leeds, England, in 1985. Formed from the ashes of the short-lived Lost Pandas, the Weddoes (as they were affectionately dubbed by fans) were essentially the vehicle of singer/songwriter David Gedge, the only constant member throughout the group's tumultuous history. Initially rounded out by guitarist Peter Solowka, bassist Keith Gregory, and drummer Shaun Charman, the fledgling band quickly won a loyal foll...[more]

This huge collection summarizes the early portion of the Wedding Present's career, the C-86 era of jangly, revved-up indie-pop. The release compiles the band's first album and its first two singles ("Nobody's Twisting You Arm" and "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now") -- 23 tracks worth of the hyper pop the band is known for. Apart from the dark and majestic Seamonsters, George Best + is easily the best possible introduction to the band's work; it's also a fine introduction to the entire C-8   [ read more ]

The Wedding Present was, and is, one of the most influential and successful indie bands in Britain. Active from 1986 to 1996, the band, fronted by songwriter and only constant member David Gedge, had seventeen Top 40 UK hit singles, patronage by the late renowned DJ John Peel, and acclaimed albums released on RCA/BMG, Island, and Cooking Vinyl. Among other notable achievements, the band had twelve chart singles - one each month -- in 1992, equaling Elvis' 35-year-old British record for "most hits in one yea   [ read more ]

The band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with their 1985 debut. That intensity has been turned up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first collaboration with the leg   [ read more ]

CDs these days wrap up most of the Weddoes' non-LP releases in neat bows. Their earliest 45s form Tommy. In 1999, Manifesto records released Singles 1989-1991, the first five singles the group recorded after signing to RCA, with extra tracks. The band's "single a month" 1992 series of 12 originals and 12 covers can be found on two CDs, Hit Parades 1 and 2. There's also a Peel Sessions CD. And now the post-Watusi work is given the same treatment. Those who already bought 1996's {^M   [ read more ]

By the advent of this, their second album for Cooking Vinyl, the Wedding Present's career was in terminal decline. Perhaps not artistically, but certainly commercially. Not that such things bothered Gedge, who gave the impression he was pleased to have been able to abuse RCA's (and then Island's) generosity for as long as he had. It would be nice to report that the group survived the move from a major-label berth intact, but this album was a dour affair, lacking the gusto of previous releases   [ read more ]

Two years on from their debut album, the Wedding Present delivered a proper sophomore effort, one quite distanced from the jangle punk days of 1987's George Best. Though David Gedge's obsession with the lovelorn had by no means disappeared, the band finally found a way to frame his lyrics properly, resulting in a darker album with more emotional weight where needed. "Brassneck," the Weddoes' first collaboration with engineer Steve Albini, became their biggest hit yet, peaking at Number    [ read more ]
