There is no reason to cry over spilt Tigersmilk, the new working trio of cornet player and electronicst Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground Duo, Isotope 217), bassist Jason Roebke (Fed Lonberg-Holm Trio, Terminal 4) and workaholic percussionist Dylan van der Schyff. A floral meshing of the senses, these two Chicagoans clear the room to unravel all forms of rubbery trails and sonic smears in order to go up against the Canadian percussionist and his clattering of metals and drumheads. A sorta nightmarish hard-bop group for post-traditionalists, the abstraction contained here is not without its solid nods to standard playing and history. The secret vibrations in these nine group improvisations recall the best work by these three, each adding minute details and signature torques of nuance. Mazurek¹s horn is a melodic weight and counter to his free form electronix and static that arcs across the other two. His two sound sources appear and burst behind points of rhythm that rhythm. Roebke churns over grooves that cannot be displaced. No matter what distances Mazurek and van der Schyff sprint off in opposite directions the four strings of rhythm snap them back to shine among the sorrow undertows of cornet and scarping metal.
