2010, Outside Music
For those that believe they don't write songs like they used to, there is new hope for old romantics: sultry Canadian chanteuse Jill Barber is picking up the “torch” where the golden age of music left off.
On her latest album Chances, Barber takes a giant step forward from the typical confines of the singer-songwriter and delivers an album of original, fully orchestrated songs that could be easily mistaken for classics.
Unabashedly romantic, the album harkens back to a bygone era, though it is difficult to pinpoint any one period of music in particular. Reminiscent of such greats as Edith Piaf, Patsy Cline, and Etta James, Chances gives a gentle nod to the old standards while making way for a new era of modern love songs.
