2010, Crammed Discs
The Congotronics series has inspired an army of fans in the world of alternative rock and electronic music, and now comes a chance for some of the hugely diverse range of artists who have stated their love for the series to commit their enthusiasm to tape. Crammed Discs has asked a carefully chosen list of the musicians and producers to come up with their own take on Konono No. 1, Kasai Allstars and the other Congotronics bands. The result is an epic, impossibly varied selection of music that is about as far from being a straightforward remix compilation as California is from Kinshasa: many of the tracks blur the boundaries between subtle reinventions and covers, beautifully executed reworks and fascinating, more indirect homages. Much like its source material, this music is by turns beautifully serene, invigoratingly noisy and aimed squarely at open-minded dancefloors - yet always intriguing and in some way revelatory. Featuring contributions by: Animal Collective, Deerhoof, Juana Molina, Andrew Bird, Mark Ernestus, Micachu & the Shapes, Oneida, Optimo, Jolie Holland, Glenn Kotche, and many more!
