With producer Steve Fisk at the helm, Unwound's first album bursts out of the gate with the opener "Dragnalus" and tears through a dozen songs of prime indie-grindcore, including "Star Spangled Hell" and "Pure Pain Sugar." ~ Keith Farley, All Music Guide

User Reviews

Ribfoam Flavorcrest - Sticky Wallpaper Hairdome, CO, USA
Listen to this album, it is manically enjoyable. I love it. It goes in and out of inebriated states of rage, disillusionment, paranoia, and conviction. Punk with a heart if you will. The band has a real sense of dynamics as well as an understated, drifting musical vocabulary. The whole album has this sputtery sense of dispensing melodicism over the harder, abrasive parts that is very refreshing and works very well. The band is young and is proving their worth, hence the punchiness. Some of it sounds like it was made underwater, in space, or inside a large mammal. The whole thing has one constant heart beat. In short, good independent loud, smart, and uncontrived music with a face.

This album is a fingerprint on glass: a perfectly preserved, undeniably authentic, deeply personal artifact from Sarah, Vern and Justin. A dissonant, powerful and beautifully, innocently, imperfect album, Fake Train begins with sentiments that are likely still at the core of Justin. It's interesting that the last song on the album speaks in an inclusive "we" -- something that I don't believe unwound will be doing again anytime soon, and is probably reflective of the youth they had at the time. It's a shame unwound has matured far beyond it, and I'm doubtful I'll ever hear anything with as much purity from them again.

What can I say? Dragnalus, Valentine Card. Amazing songs full of raw energy. It doesn't get much better than this. Don't pass this Unwound album up. It's one of their best.

unwound is one of the most underrated bands out there... this album is great! second only to repetition as far as they go. buy it.
