Leaves Turn Inside You (2xCD)
The first album from Unwound in three years finds them naturally having spent more time refining their musicianship in the studio. Their style has grown toward more ambitious playing. Their songwriting has matured with the creation of refined pieces and movements, well balanced and thought out. There are instrumental pieces that will surprise you, and sing-alongs that will woo you. Guest musicians include Steve Fisk, Janet Weiss, and Brandt Sandeno. The double CD is beautifully packaged and features videos for "Radio Gra" (by NYC video artist Slater Bradley) and "Scarlette" (by Portand-based animator Zack Margolis).

| From “post-punk” to “post-rock” - all in 4years. The early screaming dissonance whose Husker Du-ish vocals and Come chords gave way to popish Sonic Youth-like song structures of Repetition. Now they have successfully combined the popish formulas of the early 90’s shoe gazers with the spacey pop of Flying Saucer Attack - with a heavy dose of mournful smouldering epics similar to that of the excellent new Shipping News sound. | |

| "best before" (as stereotypical as that sounds) I suppose. Unwound continues to amaze me, but they've lost some of their purity, and certainly shown a lack of care towards lyrics in this album, which still stands out above most any of the other new albums I've heard. They have some excellent peices on the album, but overall bad production and completely impotent lyrics. My first opinion of this album was worse, as I hadn't seen them perform the songs on it very often. After seeing five or six shows now with their new material, I can safely say that the problems are more in production than in content. I don't know what Justin was thinking with the vocal production, and I can't express enough how much I miss the overall separation and sharp edges of earlier recordings. | |

| I dunno. I have been wrong about this band before, but right now this seems like an ambitious, but fairly abject, failure. On this record Unwound for the most part depart from the angularity and spareness of their best stuff, which is fine, but that style has been replaced by a droning, reverb-drenched thing (especially on disc 2) which doesn't excite me. Where's your energy? I also put off by the new smoove vocal style. "December" and "Off This Century" are good. | |

| Good god is about all I can say. The 2 minute intro to We Invent You starts the album off on a beautiful note. It just keeps getting better from there. Unwound doing a 2 disc set full of good material. It's probably their best album to date, and one of the biggest transitions in a bands music and style I've ever heard of next to Radiohead. Purchase now from Insound or die! | |
