2001, Vinyl Japan
After the demise of the seminal indie trailblazers the Young Marble Giants in 1980, Alison Statton and fellow Cardiffan Spike, moved to London. After teaming up with Simon Booth who was then working at the Mole Jazz record shop, they formed Weekend.
Their debut single on Rough Trade 'The View From Her Room' presented a breezy bass-driven jazz shuffle involved were Penguin Cafe Orchestra's Simon Jeffes, jazz veteran Harry Beckett, and Centipede's Larry Stabbins. Weekend's introspective lyrics and multi-cultural jazz influences (from Gilberto Gill and Astrud Gilberto to King Sunny Ade) ensured that Weekend were quickly adopted by the young and fashionable London 'jazz-club' scene. Indie chart hits followed with 'Past Meets Present' and 'Drumbeat For Baby'.
Weekends debut album 'La Varieté' perfectly captured their light summery feel. Vinyl Japan are now able to bring you this classic album on LP and CD (which includes 1981 demos of some of the essential tracks). This will be a real treat for Weekend and Young Marble Giants fans alike. It'd be a shame to disappoint them...
