Cradle of Filth
British black metal band Cradle of Filth was formed in 1991, originally comprising vocalist Dani Filth (born Daniel Lloyd Davey), guitarist Paul Ryan, his keyboardist brother Benjamin, bassist John Richard, and drummer Darren. After recording a demo dubbed Invoking the Unclean a year later, the group recruited guitarist Robin Eaglestone, who quit soon after recording a second demo, Orgiastic Pleasures; however, when Richard exited the band a short time later, Eaglestone stepped back in to assume bass duties, opening the door for guit...[more]

Cradle of Filth may be one of the only recognizable underground metal acts to an average person. Although mom and dad might not know who they are, the band enjoyed a streak of notoriety through the late '90s into the turn of the century that would be hard for a music fan to miss. Their theatrical approach to the black metal genre was nothing new, but they turned it up a notch by cutting out much of the humor and bad special effects that groups like Mercyful Fate depended on and replaced them wit [ read more ]

Although the black metal resurgence in the '90s was centralized in Scandinavian countries, Britain's Cradle of Filth was perhaps the most recognizable band to appear during that time. Brandishing a razor-sharp wit, excellent playing skills, memorable songs, and a penchant for controversy, the band had just the right combination of skills to make it a genuine threat to the mainstream. To celebrate Cradle of Filth's ten years of metal rumblings, the band compiled tracks from each of its albums and [ read more ]

As satanic as anything need be, Cradle of Filth are a black metal ensemble from Suffolk, England, who've managed to keep it extreme, while being wildly popular internationally. They may be the most popular black metal band in the world because they've managed to break away from the genre's relatively small cult following and successfully infect all sorts of disaffected teenagers, especially in Europe. They never veer drastically from the usual black metal staples: movie monster-type vocals, lots of high- [ read more ]

The music on From the Cradle to Enslave was originally featured on the Cradle of Filth home video {#PanDaemonAeon}, and was released overseas several months before its 2000 American issue. While not quite on the level of the band's best full-lengths, the EP is a worthy addition to any fan's collection, featuring several songs that rank with the best of their work, as well as a cover of spiritual forebears the Misfits' "Death Comes Ripping." ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Cradle of Filth's third full-length is another slab of uncompromising black metal, a darkly melodramatic opus where the song titles alone ("Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids," "The Twisted Nails of Faith," and "Lustmord and Wargasm [The Lick of Carnivorous Winds]") tell almost the entire story; fans of the genre will embrace Cruelty and the Beast, but the unconverted are likely to find it all rather silly. [The 2001 reissue appended a bonus CD that offered the album version of {&"Lustmord and W [ read more ]

What if a black metal band with a penchant for performance art and symphony-sized stage shows got a major label to back up and fund its perverted vision of apocalypse? The result would be something like Damnation and a Day, a metal album that features a 40-piece orchestra and 32-piece choir, but is still definitely extreme-sounding and can in no way be viewed as a sellout. Cradle of Filth was called a sellout long before they hooked up with Sony. Hardcore black metalers thought their stage [ read more ]

Cradle of Filth is most notorious for bringing respectability to the Norwegian black metal template, the band threatening to actually make the genre enjoyable, thanks to acceptable production values and an admirable songwriting ethic mostly absent among the early reptilian belchings croaked forth from dank Norse basements -- and Cradle is British to boot. Utilizing flowery classical flourishes, tangible melodies, nimble death/thrash riffing, a coherent -- albeit crushing -- rhythmic batter [ read more ]

On the surface, Cradle of Filth's Vempire or Dark Fairytales in Phallustein is a stopgap EP released to appease Cacophonous Records, thus ending the band's strained relationship with the London-based label. But it also marks the beginning of Cradle of Filth's image- and chops-heavy, slyly tongue-in-cheek persona. Highly stylized album artwork depicting partially unclothed, buxom maidens in various lurid, bloody poses and a giggle-inducing title (one hopes that {^Vempire or Dark Fairytales in Pha [ read more ]

Originally intended to be an EP, Bitter Suites to Succubi found Cradle of Filth inspired to stretch the release into a beast of full-length proportions. With that in mind, Bitter Suites is, unsurprisingly, a somewhat tossed salad of Cradle of Filth tracks: four top-shelf new originals (""All Hope in Eclipse,"" ""Born in a Burial Gown,"" ""Suicide and Other Comforts,"" and ""Scorched Earth Erotica"") mingle with three re-recordings of The Principle of Evil Made Flesh-era cuts ({&"" [ read more ]
