Most compilations are very bad. Bad compilations usually happen because they were never intended to stand as proper albums. A band (hopefully) enters the studio with a set of ideas, songs, and common vision. But compilation compilers rarely use that criterion when selecting songs. Often the intention is to make an anthropological statement, documenting a scene or a style of music--think of punk or dance or reggae collections. Sometimes the point is simply to cram a lot of well-known artists onto one CD. This inevitably backfires since the tracks are either widely available or those rare "unreleased" tracks have remained in the vaults for good reason. StarTime International's Supercuts avoids these pitfalls. On this record are sixteen essentially unknown artists, all of whom have penned great songs that sound great next to each other.
