Teenagers in Love [Golden Stars] (CD)

Falling in love comes with its own soundtrack and no subgenre in pop has more yearning, uncertainty, and declaration in its songs than those about teenage love. This three-disc budget box collects unabashed teenage love songs from the 1950s and early '60s, the era when record labels first began to target American kids (rather than their parents) as prime consumers. Classics abound, including Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Hurt So Bad" (which is matched only by Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" in the wounded desperation department), "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips, "Book of Love" by the Monotones, and the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," as well as dozens of other hits. Truthfully, contemporary teenagers have their own soundtrack, and it isn't this one, but their parents and grandparents might want to give this collection a try, if only to touch base again with that first awkward, stumbling step toward finding love and a future in this big wide world. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
