The first half of the 1960s saw Andy Warhol come into his own as a Pop artist; by the time he moved into his studio "the Factory" in 1963, his celebrity was also on the rise. In 1966, Warhol saw the Velvet Underground play in Greenwich Village and subsequently became their manager. Warhol produced The Velvet Underground & Nico's self- titled debut album and designed the iconic cover, featuring his famous Banana artwork with his stamped signature. Designed as an autonomous artwork, the cover was revolutionary in its complete absence of reference to the band and its use of Pop art. The experimental nature of the music and Warhol's innovative cover secured the album's place among the greatest rock albums in history.
