We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River, Richmond Fontaine's eighth album to date (not including tour/mailorder-only albums) finds the band at their peak both artistically and commercially. Singer/songwriter Willy Vlautin has spent a year writing this album and he says it is by far his strongest yet, and it shows. The band, a long-time critical favorite, is reaching further away from the Kings of Americana tag they were given by UNCUT in 2005 and more along the lines of Bon Iver, Wilco and The National.

This album is all written by singer/songwriter Willy Vlautin, whom has already released two fiction novels to great acclaim. It was produced by JD Foster (Dwight Yokam, Calexico, Green on Red) at Jackpot studios in Portland, Oregon. The core of the band is still Willy Vlautin, Sean Oldham, Dave Harding and Dan Eccles.
