Maladroit (CD)
Bands used to make records like this all the time. They'd release an album, tour all year, write a bunch of songs, record 'em, release another album a year later. Since hardly anybody -- not even indie bands -- did that in 2002, it's a remarkable event when Weezer does exactly that, especially following a half a decade of inactivity. But, it's hard not to think that this is the way it should be done by all bands, since Maladroit retains the high quality of The Green Album. True, it doesn't offer much that's new -- it has a similarly short length, clocking in at 33 minutes, it favors riff-heavy, melodic rockers and has a lack of ballads, while Rivers Cuomo is doggedly avoiding the exposed-nerve confessions of Pinkerton -- but there are a couple notable differences that give it its own character. Since the band has returned to self-producing, there's a tougher sound -- nowhere near as raw as Pinkerton, yet similarly loud and raucous, overflowing with guitars spitting out riffs and solos with a gleeful abandon. So, it's essentially a harder-rocking version of the last album. But you know what? It doesn't matter because the band is at a peak. Cuomo continues to write consistently strong songs, occasionally penning a flat-out stunner ("Dope Nose" is one of Weezer's all-time greatest songs), the band is tighter than ever, and the record crackles with energy -- nothing new, per se, but still vibrant, catchy, and satisfying. It's so good, it's hard not to think that it offers definitive proof that even in 2002, it's best for a band to keep going once they've hit a peak, to turn out a bunch of records that find them at the top of their game instead of waiting three or four years to craft a follow-up. After all, that's what builds not only a body of work, but a legacy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

| Oh, Rivers, why do you embarrass yourself? This record is awful and it's awfulness becomes completely dramatic when compared to the first two Weezer records (even the third album sounds like a masterpiece compared to this one). All the things that made this band so special are, simply, gone. | |

| For those expecting Maladroit to be Weezer's new masterpiece, there might be a bit of disappointment. To be honest, I thought Rivers was working from a pattern. I figured they would release one pop album followed by an emotional and heartfelt release.. as they had done with the Blue album and Pinkerton. However, it seems that Mr. Cuomo is still avoiding anything too personal in terms of lyrics. That being said, Maladroit is a decent collection of songs from a band enjoying its own output. The songs are less pop-oriented than the Green album, but still have that catchy Weezer quality for which they are known. I'm still holding out for a return to the personal singer/songwriter style that made Pinkerton so wonderful. Until then I'll just try to relax and enjoy the tunes. I suggest you do the same. | |

| Wow, I am glad weezer finnaly made a good cd since they got back together. I was disapointed with green, but maladroit is good. It's not exactly like pinkerton or blue(my 2 favorite cds) but it still rocks in a different way. I definetely recomend this cd. Keep fishin', Dope Nose, Slave, and Burndt Jamb are my favorites on this cd. GET THIS CD! | |

| I was worried when I picked the CD up, thinking that weezer was gonna serve us more in-your-face pop like green, but this CD is really good! I wont go in to how is doesnt measure to blue or pinkerton, but compared to whatever else is on the self, its amazing, Rivers, marry me. | |

| This album was pretty good...I was surprised that they got another one out so quickly! I love every song, but wish the cd were a little longer. You can actually FEEL the bass which is awesome and the riffs are a little bit harder than we're used to from the Weez. I have to admit that I still hold Pinkerton and the Blue album as my favs, but this one is definitely a good one (and better than the green album). I like the lyrics booklet too...that was a nice touch! Overall it's a good album and one you can listen to over and over again...go and get it! =w= | |

| I want more than anything to enjoy a new weezer record, but the new songs are terrible. the lyrics are unemotional and trite at the same time, and the songs lack any sense of musicality weezer stumbled upon earlier in their carreers. Pinkerton is their masterpiece, and it's a solid record. it seems to have been their peak. I'm sorry. | |

| Weezer was amazing to me. The first band I have ever found, besides Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles, that writes songs as complete things. There isn't any "filler" music and everything stands out. I really liked the Green Album because it was the album that got me into Weezer, and Pinkerton is wonderful. The Blue Album is awesome, as all have said. But Maladroit kind of disappointed me. It wasn't the Weezer sound I was used to. It is much harder, yet also trying to be mainstream sounding. However, I feel it will grow on me in time. Perhaps Weezer has just grown up and is trying to break out of the stereotype they have created for themselves. | |

| the great thing about this cd is the diversity, while it always sounds like weezer. you get rockier songs like take control, fall together, slower ones like d+d, december, poppier ones like keep fishin, possibilities, and love explosion, and burndt jam(i dunno what to call that, but its different.)
and its all weezer. personally, i say dont compare it to blue or pinkerton, just compare it to the rest of the stuff coming out nowadays.. and it rocks, an easy 4. | |

| Maladroit is such a great cd! I bought it on the release date, and I haven't stop listening to it! However, I must say that I was a bit disappointed in Houston, because there wasn't one listening party! What's up with that? But anyways, it's great, so buy it! | |

| this album is really good, im very pleased. the solos are kick ass and the melodies are wonderful. the songs can be catchy ... think of the green album and the blue album add a ton of distortion and a little rock and you have maladroit. 13 tracks of pure enjoyment i can listen to the cd over and over and never get bored... it comes with a booklet with lyrics.. thats a first for weezer- i definitely recommend getting Maladroit =) | |

| this cd definitely rocks, with a ton of excellent tracks the first time through (dope nose, slave, slob, december) and the others only get better with time... better than green, but blue and pinkerton still rock my world and have been for years.. hopefully this album will do the same.. | |

| This CD rocks face. I loved it! It is about time Rivers let go and let loose with the guitar! The guitar riffs in this are absolutely fabulous. The lyrics, once again, are about the love deprived Rivers, but I love them so much. Great CD! | |

| Weezer's Maladroit shows what a great band this is. It proves that Rivers is a great writer and musician. It also displays Brian's talents for playing the guitar and his background vocals are great. It also shows just how good a drummer Pat is. I think this albulm is already a classic. | |

| What the hell happened with Weezer? I 'm a big fan, but this is not a good album. It's too loud and has only a few good songs (Burndt Jamb and Slave). And why does it include the Green Album-song Island In The Sun? People should buy the first Weezer-album, not this one. I'm just a bit dissapointed. | |

| Great sounds, great guitar riffs, catchy tunes but no heart. The lyrics seem so contrived (girls, love lost, unrequited love blah blah) one of the things i love about weezer is their originality and the special little touches and quirks in their lyrics. It made them stood out from the rest. Now it is just the same old stuff. but definatley better than green. a great cd to rock out on. thank you weezer for the good times. | |

| maladroit is good, but weezer fans that like the older stuff might be disappointed. the band has progressed a lot but still hasn't seemed to capture the emotion they had on the blue album and pinkerton. so yes, maladroit is good but if you didn't like the green album you're probably not going to like this. it does not sound much like the weezer i grew up with. | |

| This cd is awesome, however I don't feel it was quite as good as the others. Perhaps it was rushed a bit to get put out. But, its Weezer!!! I like that it has 13 tracks, first one that doens't have 10. And the video clips are an excellent bonus. | |
