2005, Alien8
The Unicorns' first release on Alien8 Recordings features 13 tracks deeply rooted in careful songwriting and lo-fi pop experimentalism. The Unicorns have a gift for blending a morbid sense of humor with irresistible pop melodies caked with beautiful vocals employing thoughtful, near-sacred lyrics. Having blossomed in Montreal, Quebec, The Unicorns have packed their things and are going out into the world to back up their reputation as Canada's most promising new band -- and planet Earth's next big thing.

Tom SpeakerEvery song on ''Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?'' is perfect. Why? Because there's only one song. It's called ''The Clap.'' Everything else is a brilliant pop melody worthy of being ignored because it doesn't fit into the grand scheme of things. Outside of the aforementioned track, almost nothing on this record comes together. The Unicorns are so incapable of writing real songs that they just threw their best melodies into random heaps---and that is why this much-lauded record fails. Thankfully, Islands' ''Return to the Sea'' corrected those errors a few years later.

Peter PendergrassI have to say that is album is the veritable SHIT. It's awesome. It's crazy, that's given, but it's great because it's crazy. You have to be in the right mood for this album. It's not meant to be deep and life-changing. It's feel good, dancing in your bedroom, sort of spazzy, Canadian goodness. That's that. (So suck it Beavercreek!)
