Why?
One of the more indie rock acts on the usually hip-hop-leaning label Anticon, the indefinable Why? come from the Oakland Bay area. The genre-blending band came to the revered label because of main man Yoni Wolf's college friendship with Anticon artist Doseone. The enigmatic Split was their first release for the label in 2002 and was followed a year later by Oaklandazulasylum. Both the Sanddollars EP and the full-length Elephant Eyelash appeared in 2005. The following year the Rubber Traits EP came out, and in 2008 Alopecia hit shelves. ~ Dav...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. Two years after wooing critics with their beloved Elephant Eyelash, Why? returns, third LP in hand. As expected, the band - Yoni Wolf, Josiah Wolf, Doug McDiarmid-- continues its calculated blitzkrieg on that self-made jangle-rap, indie pop 'n' roll genre, but the stakes are raised. The boys returned to their Midwest roots for Alopecia, hunkering down in Minneapolis's Third Ear studio and inducting a pair of venerable big guns into the band: Fog mastermind Andrew Broder and bassi [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Yoni Wolf and the gang actually recorded Eskimo Snow at the same time as Alopecia, at Minneapolis' Third Ear studio, with Fog's Andrew Broder and Mark Erickson rounding out a live quintet. The vision for two separate albums emerged on a snow-in night after a hot toddy or two. If Alopecia, however inexplicably, maintains a summer town, then Eskimo Snow captures the bite and resignation of the Midwestern winters with which these Cincinnati boys grew up. [ read more ]

Here's a record by a hip-hop emcee who spends half the album hunched over a guitar, daring to slum it as a bedroom songwriter. As a member of Anticon-- the hip-hop collective that bleeds at will into other genres-- it's no surprise for Why? (born Jonathan Wolf) to mix in live instruments or write straight-up songs; he already matched guitar with beats on Miss Ohio's Nameless, and you could call his half of Split EP a kind of song cycle. And yet every time I throw on Oaklandazulasylum it still sounds like [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Oaklandazulasylum, Why?'s first official self-produced full-length release, is fourteen lonely art songs recorded over two years time. With sharp focus and visceral lyrics set in decisive production, each song maintains individuality while positioned to fulfill its unique role in the record's sequence. Why?'s rapped and crooned poem parts are a grief-like laugh with the western world, and through the eyeholes of a catchy candy song mask outpour the half-empty honests of a man in moods. VINYL FORMAT.Here is Elephant Eyelash, the brand-new, brilliant album from WHY? at the very least you should be asking yourself, "why not?" Elephant Eyelash is a beautifully realized work, a smile-twisted opus of bright colors, dark corners and fearless moves by head architect Yoni Wolf (cLOUDDEAD, Reaching Quiet, Hymies Basement). After six years of treating WHY? as a solo project, Yoni has fashioned WHY? into a full-fledged band. The Sanddollars EP presented the group working through [ read more ]
