Will Oldham
For most of the '90s, Will Oldham was the mastermind of Palace Music, a shambling, country-tinged indie rock group that recorded under a variety of names. The only constant in Palace was Oldham, and he would often record as a solo artist under the Palace name. That fact made his decision to retire the Palace name in 1997 somewhat baffling, since for all intents and purposes, he was the band. Nevertheless, Joya, Oldham's first album as a solo artist, was slightly different than Palace, boasting a slightly darker and somber tone. Like all the {$Pala...[more]

Companion piece to the Palace Music singles collection, "Guarapero" compiles stuff from The Palace years (1991-1995) through the Will Oldham years (1996-2000), and includes some unreleased gems, plus faves like "Drinking Woman" and "Every Mother's Son"; special requests like "The Spider's Dude Is Often There" and "Gezundheit"; and a high-larious cover of AC/DC's "Big Balls" that is too too cheeky. Also includes two tracks from the infamous, never-to-be-released "Guarapero" LP, recorded by Steve Albini a [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Once again, Will Oldham emerges out of the murky, Midwestern haze with another helping of lovely, low-key musings on his fourth full-length album, Arise, Therefore, this time recorded under the name Palace Music (previously Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, or just plain Palace). Much quieter than Viva Last Blues and less-Appalachian in its folk spirit than Palace's earlier music, the songs on Arise, Therefore shift and moan with breathy cracks and shivers; Oldham's meandering, poet-speak vocals; [ read more ]

Solo debut for Palace/Palace Music/Palace Brothers' Will Oldham. Special guest appearance by Dave Berman of the Silver Jews. All Music Guide's Stephen Thomas Erlewine said, "Retiring the Palace moniker for no reason other than a whim, Will Oldham doesn't necessarily explore new territory on his first official solo album, Joya. Oldham sticks to the simple, slow acoustic country-folk songs that dominated the latter-day Palace albums, and like before, the songs teeter between apparent sincerity and inscrutable [ read more ]

Throughout his career, Will Oldham has returned to the setting of "Black/Rich Music." Beginning with his 1994 Palace Brothers album "Days in the Wake," some of Oldham's best songs have been recorded solo. Oldham relies on a basic, strummed accompaniment for the acoustic material on "Black/Rich Music," and songs seem to have been written and recorded with little editing or refinement. Still, the simply hewn melodies and one-take feel of the performances are all part of what is endearing about Oldham's approa [ read more ]

The first new WILL OLDHAM record in two years to be released under his own name. An instrumental soundtrack of sorts to a short film called Ode by KELLY REICHARDT, recorded in Shelbyville, KY by Will's brother PAUL. RESTOCK! Ten pieces, all done as a cycle with a repeating guitar line, slowly augmented with layers of keyborard melodies that grow more ominous and beautiful as the moments pass.
