Windsor for the Derby

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Hailing from Tampa, Florida, the founding members of the atmospheric post-rock group Windsor for the Derby -- guitarists Dan Matz and Jason McNeeley, along with drummer Greg Anderson -- soon migrated to Austin, Texas, where they were signed to the local Trance Syndicate label. Their debut LP, 1996's Calm Hades Float, was produced and engineered by Adam Witzie, who agreed to become a full-time Windsor for the Derby member shortly after the project's completion. After issuing the EP Metropolitan Then Poland in early 1997, the group closed out the year with t...[more]

This year Windsor for the Derby celebrates its tenth year with the release of its fifth full-length, "We Fight Til Death." Over those ten years Dan Matz, newly relocated to Philadelphia, and Jason McNeely, from Austin, have managed to maintain this project over the many miles. Over the last few years, Timothy White and Ben Cissner have jumped on board to lend their invaluable assistance and helped to create a solid quartet. With each release, WFTD finds a way to take a wholly different trajectory while crea   [ read more ]

Taking a slightly different route than on their previously uniformly solid releases, Windsor for the Derby eschews the weighty instrumentals of their past in favor of a mix emphasizing vocals, solemn acoustic guitars, and florescent keyboards. On their fourth album, the minimalist and hypnotic tendencies of their past remain, with Dan Matz and Jason McNeely remaining as the only full-time members of the band. Now walking the line between spacy folk and chamber pop, the arrangements of twin   [ read more ]

Despite the connotation of its title, How We Lost is a celebratory album. It's a reflective record and, in its own way, celebrates the Windsor For The Derby continuum that's been created from their first release (Calm Hades Float, 1996) to their last (Giving Up the Ghost, 2005). Each of these recordings is a sequel to the next both in narrative and musically and as the band's first two were re-released last year they found themselves in constant dialogue about their body of work and the   [ read more ]

On their debut recording for Young God, and third album overall, Windsor for the Derby refine their delicate, intricate guitar landscape even further. Based in Austin, TX, the group is comprised of Daniel Matz and Jason McNeeley with guests that include Adam Wiltzie from Stars of the Lid, Christian Goyer, and Erik O'Brien. Keyboards, from floating electric pianos and tightly woven yet spaciously measured guitar patterns, dictate the flow from which Windsor for the Derby's music em   [ read more ]

Windsor for the Derby are a study in dualities. It is made of two primary band members preserving not only a musical identity but a friendship over many years and many miles. Creating music that is equal parts dance and folk, a truly disparate combination of styles that come out sounding completely organic. While listening to Giving Up The Ghost, you hear not only the beautiful stylistic tension of two styles at play, but also the room and atmosphere itself. Windsor's music has always been a play on    [ read more ]

Windsor For The Derby's Aesthetics debut is a diverse 5 track CD EP, containing glorious remixes from the likes of Pulseprogramming, Carnival Wave, I - Sound, Calla, and Windsor For The Derby themselves. Surprisingly (unlike some remixed records), these 5 tracks work incredibly well with one another, yet at the same time maintaining their own distinct personality. Carnival Wave's mix starts things off with pure bliss, which then leads perfectly into labelmates Pulseprogramming's dubbed out piece. On the 3rd   [ read more ]

This is Windsor's 4th full length, and it is a vast departure from their older more jagged and dark sound, and it also is a huge step away from being noted as a mostly instrumental group. They've actually come off writing a gem of a pop record! For those of you that heard the latest M. Gira/D. Matz CD on Young God, look for more of this sound, on this latest Windsor effort. Lazy and pastoral, yet intense, direct and simple.
