Witch
Witch utilize classic rock structures and murky -- but heavy -- atmospherics to achieve the kind of doom metal fanfare that plays to both fans of Black Sabbath and Mastodon. Longtime friends J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Dave Sweetapple had always wanted a "real" hard rock band, so they asked Asa Irons and Kyle Thomas, both members of New England avant folk collective Feathers, to join in on the racket. The resulting eponymous debut dropped in March of 2006 on Tee Pee Records. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide[more]

VINYL FORMAT. Witch is Dave Sweetapple (bass), J Mascis (drums), and Kyle Thomas (guitar/vocals), but they're no indie-metal super group or side project; that would underestimate the band members' commitment. This follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut remains true to the classic heavy rock sound of the first, but has evolved as the band has learned to play to each other's strengths. They've returned to their punk roots and attack with a more aggressive tempo. This record burns with hostility.

The group Witch was born from a marriage of apparently contradictory influences. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. renown and his long time friend Dave Sweetapple were interested in forming a hard rock band. They found willing and able conspirators in Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, members New England avant-folk outfit Feathers. On their eponymous debut album, this line-up mounts a mighty sonic tumult that harkens back to classic heavy metal sound of early 70's outfits while still sounding modern in it's assault (and wi [ read more ]

Many admirers of '80s-era indie rock will always consider Dinosaur Jr. to be toward the top of the heap -- thanks to such classic releases as 1987's You're Living All Over Me and 1988's Bug. However, guitarist J Mascis always was a classic rocker at heart -- his melodic yet fuzzy solos were equal parts Neil Young and Ace Frehley. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Mascis' early-21st century side project Witch could easily be mistaken for a heavy metal release -- in [ read more ]
