Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice
In addition to running the Polyamory label with Tovah O'Rourke, James Toth was the leader of New York-based avant-garde/freak folk ensemble Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice. Taking the first part of that name as his own -- and occasionally billing himself as "Wooden Wand Jehovah" -- Toth gathered at one point or another O'Rourke (who also comprised Dead Machines with her husband, Wolf Eyes' John Olson), Satya Sai, Glucas Crane, Steven the Harvester, and Heidi Diehl. There were others, too -- the Vanishing Voice lineup shifted as...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. While past releases saw the band's avant folk dosed somewhat conservatively with the blues, free jazz, heavy psych, and metal, Gipsy Freedom brings these other, non-folk elements to the fore and generally turns the volume up. It's the band's most confounding and rewarding release. You may hear the faint echoes of Island Harvest-era Albert Ayler on one track, Iommi-derived riffage on the next, torch songs that sound torn straight from the Gershwin songbook on the next, and Can-sty [ read more ]

Wooden Wand are one of the most original bands in NYC at the moment, taking the term psych/folk/noise to new levels. Beautiful female harmonies, wonderful musicianship, and straight up noise collapse into a wonderful mixture that's unique and beautiful. Plainly, this is soul music. Liner notes by Thurston Moore.

This mysterious NY-based collective will be touring this summer with the somewhat mysterious Castanets (Asthmatic Kitty), Skygreen Leopards (Jagjaguwar), and I Heart Lung (Sounds Are Active). The band, which seems to change membership with the rise of each new moon, has been releasing a steady stream of CD-Rs and cassettes over the past year, including two which will now see proper re-issue. Wooden Wand is multi-faceted and difficult to define with their twisted and droning take on psychedelic folk.

The first full-length CD from multifaceted and mysterious psychedelic drone-folk travelers Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice. L'un Marquer Contre la Moissonneuse is an exploration of the goodness inherent in the human heart and how that decency can help transform the world into a better place. Cryptic, proto-spiritual, emotionally bare, brashly exuberant and, throughout it all, completely entrancing.

The continuing career of Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice could almost be described as that of enjoyably amused willfulness -- they seem all too readily to be lumped into the neo-psych/folk collective ramalama of the early 21st century, but then they start an album like Gipsy Freedom with a song consisting of nothing but low-key free jazz sax and female singing and all of a sudden the spirit of Patty Waters reincarnated proves a better touchstone than Syd Barrett. James Jackson Toth is the former frontman and chief songwriter for the indie post-hippie unit Wooden Wand. Hard Knox is a collection of songs demoed at one time or another for possible inclusion on Wooden Wand recordings, rather than on his solo offerings (hence the moniker "Wand" listed on the cover). "The Wand" writes a long apologia liner essay in which he defends himself, if not his songs, on the sleeve of the digipack cover of this CD. He claims to know that most demo collections are [ read more ]
