Woods
Wanting to explore their alternative folk side, bandmates Jeremy Earl and Christian DeRoeck from the Brooklyn indie rock outfit Meneguar gathered up some friends and went into the woods to play. Hence, the band Woods was born. After releasing a double cassette on Earl's Fuck It Tapes, At Rear House on Shrimper Records in early 2007. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide[more]

VINYL FORMAT. Insound Staff Pick - 2009! The fourth full length by Woods, Songs of Shame, rips deeper with both 90-second and 10-minute forays into skeletal psychedelia. This is not to say the idiosyncratic songwriting style and vocalizing of Jeremy Earl is not present in spades but expanded, colored, and twisted into a tie-dye of soundscapes. Having toured incessantly over the last 12 months as a four piece (Jarvis Taveniere, G. Lucas Crane and Kevin Morby round out the band), many of the son [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Two brand new songs" "Sunlight" b/w "The Dark." These guys are pretty unstoppable right now. Really nice. "...we've watched [Woods] go from acoustic hush to full-bodied sunburned psych before becoming something that combines both ends of the spectrum into perfectly catchy lo-fi folk rock nuggets. In another time these guys would be living in Laurel Canyon with the Byrds and Frank Zappa and Graham Nash (whose "Military Madness" Woods cover below), but instead they live in New York, [ read more ]

Woods began in the woods, at the foot of Bear Mountain. In the earliest days it was a collaborative improvisational group with two core members and several guests, known as "woodsists." Shortly thereafter, Jeremy Earl and Christian DeRoeck emerged from the woods, dusted themselves off, and began to walk upright. The two woodsists immersed themselves in human culture, learned to craft a melody, to wield a tambourine, to construct a crude phonograph from spare bicycle parts.
