David Eugene Edwards, enigmatic frontman and visionary for 16 Horsepower, began recording under the Woven Hand moniker while Horsepower was on hiatus in 2001. (The name "Woven Hand" refers to hands clasped in prayer; Edwards' Christianity -- he was raised the son of a traveling Nazarene preacher -- is a consistent, driving theme in his music.) Fans of 16HP will instantly recognize the same forces at work in Woven Hand -- e.g., incendiary gospel, hallowed folk and mordant tones infused with a high, dark theatricality worthy of Nick Cave. As in the two previous Woven Hand releases, we find David Eugene Edwards stripped down from the more aggressive full-band sound of 16 Horsepower--banjo, piano and upright bass are featured more than guitar. Edwards and company carve out a subtle atmosphere of dreamy folklore-inspired landscapes and channel tribal vibes of raw and spontaneous emotion.

In the words of Robert Browning, Wovenhand heralds 'another greater, wilder country' on Ten Stones. From the jarring folk of 'White Knuckle Grip', to the eerie bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim's 'Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars', to the fiery foot-stomper 'Not One Stone', the album forms a song-cycle that is singular in its breadth and eclecticism. Flanked by the haunting strains of the band and the drones of the double bass, Edwards' lyrical inversions stitch symbols into a tapestry of peaceable and h   [ read more ]

Soundsfamilyre is proud to present the self-titled debut album from David Eugene Edwards, aka Woven Hand. For those unfamiliar with David Eugene Edwards, he played in various bands in his L.A. before he formed 16 Horsepower with Pascal Humbert and Jean-Yves Tola in 1992. After one show, David and Jean-Yves moved to Denver, where they reformed the band with bass player Keven Sole. But David had a million ideas that needed an outlet, and Woven Hand was born. Released in Europe in early 2002 on Glitterhouse re   [ read more ]

Dreamy instrumentals, jarring anthems, haunting melodies, hypnotic percussion. Whether the biblical references inspire heartfelt devotion or confused indifference, it's the power of the words and the passionate authority with which they're sung that bring Edwards' songs to another level.

David Eugene Edwards' solo work as Woven Hand is now well established, given that he's reached his fourth album under that moniker. It's easy and accurate enough to say that Mosaic follows in the same general vein of previous efforts -- his lyrical intensity and religious foci remain paramount, while some striking cover art continues the good run on that front.
