At once dark, complex, impossibly honest, and yet, somehow simple, "Fabulous Muscles" is almost accessible in its minimalist-pop appeal. This record was written on the heels of huge upheavals and violent personal changes, so there's less of a dance influence and much more of a pop and academic/experimental feel. Sounds are used to rhythmically push some songs forward in a top-40 way, but with fewer straight beats. Noise restrictions also led to more use of single, quiet acoustic instruments. This record is the most pop Xiu Xiu record, and the most experimental. An important record.

Okay..the first listen, it was a bit tough to get into..there's some strange things going on that don't quite seem to meld initially..but after listening to it a couple more times, this is really, really a fantastic album..it's one of the most personal bits of music i've come across in a while...however, it manages to be such without coming off as overly cloying or insincere. it's really just a beautiful feel. there's something in it for just about anyone, too...a couple of tracks are rockin' out and a few more are just..almost straining to hear. it's really beautifully put together. seamless. but not pristine. just real.

THis is an amazing album. Jamies stewarts voice is haunting. It penetrates the senses well. "I luv the valley ' ho!" is one of the best songs i have ever heard. More heartbreaking than any bright eyes song. He is overated anyways. Anywho- They do have there own distinction as a group. When i listen to this i then to think that morrissey would be proud. The lyrics are disenchanting but catchy. A great listen for a music lover. If you like the cure, joy division, and the smiths than you might like xiu xiu. Jamies voice is the main intsrument on any xiu xiu song. The music coincides well. THe angular guitar, loops, keyboards, whatever. Good songs. Get this! I think this is their best release.
