2005, Fierce Panda
The calculating finger-clicks. That all-knowing Northern Soul beat. The swirling organ. The boy-baiting, tut-tutting, radio-romping three part harmonies: "You're The Loser" is definitely more than the sum of its many parts. In fact, this is a sultry pop smash for the summertime crash by THE REVELATIONS, who consist of Sarah Vitorino, Annika Magnberg and Louise Masters. One of these girls is Swedish. One is half-Portugese. And the third is from Essex. As for which is which, well, we'll leave that up to you. "You're The Loser" is produced by Ian Grimble (Travis, Manic Street Producers, McAlmont & Butler), was written by Adam Howorth (Captain Soul) and sees THE REVELATIONS drawing inspiration from The Ronnettes and Phil Spector's classic '60s Wall Of Sound groups to create a sound all of their own. And that is the sound of the underground turned completely on its head. So in true old school stylee, "You're The Loser" clocks in at a heart-clutching two minutes and twenty-three seconds. Yet THE REVELATIONS fear not the modern era, thus far eschewing the traditional turgid major label girl group development route in favour of a far grubbier, groovier journey: "You're The Loser" sees the light of day on Fierce Panda, the indie label associated with the sort of bands (see Coldplay, Keane, Placebo, Idlewild, Art Brut) who would quite probably run a million miles if confronted by THE REVELATIONS strutting down a dark alley. Rather pleasingly, "You're The Loser" has already been played on Alan McGee's feverishly alternative Radio One show, where he was caught enthusing thusly: "I've absolutely no idea about this band other than of course they are three girls, which makes me a bit more interested, being an old git. But this is brilliant!" He is very, very correct.
