2001, Headhunter
After two years of mercenary work in Africa, Deadbolt is finally back in the States to promote Zulu Death Mask, their 4th album on Cargo Music. While Deadbolt’s hollow point activities in the Serengeti have made them legends at gun shows across America, this disc should carry their notoriety onto the airwaves, as well. Zulu Death Mask is an album filled with creepy tales of the Dark Continent. You will feel like you are right there in Botswana gunning down a group of machete wielding poachers who wee trying to move in on your rhino. You will see yourself with drummer Les Vegas grinding up the rhino horn into dust, ingesting it, and then going to town with the ladies for a little shagwala. Because Deadbolt puts all this imagery into their patented Voodoobilly sound, one listen will rattle your bones and leave a creepy aftertaste. Other induced visions include a British photo safari mauled by thousands of alligators. This flesh picnic is said to have been instigated by the ghost of Malcombo. He was the evil witchdoctor who carved the Zulu Death Mask, only to have it stolen by British troops in the mid-1800’s. Adding to the black magic atmosphere are salivating jackals howling in the studio over tribal drums, all of which have been smuggled from Africa to insure a dark continent aesthetic (for the record, we are not responsible for the jackals escaping that one night when the president of Zimbabwe was vacationing in Los Angeles). So go out and rent King Solomon’s Mines with Stewart Granger or The Naked Prey with Cornel Weilde, get a six pack, relax and enjoy the Zulu Death Mask.
