September: Insound's "Cranky Sales Guy" introduces a manual, inefficient recommendation "engine" that precedes Pandora and iTunes "genius" by years.
October: Dot Com bubble bursts! Insound, never having been big enough to explode, survives.
November: DFA-mania helps confirm that New York has its first worthwhile music scene since mid-70s. Many Insound employees move to Williamsburg and get unusual haircuts.
Yeah, Yeah Yeah's
New York, New York

Looking Back at 2002:
2002 was a pivotal year as YYYs made the transition from local NY band to a group performing for the world for the first time. We only had our five song ep available then and we were surprised at the attention and hype that was being generated. It was our first taste of taking our music out of the environment (NYC) from which it was born and discovering what about it that made us and others feel so strongly about our music.
A memory of 2002 that stands out to me regarding the release of our first EP was sitting on the floor of Nick's bedroom in his loft assembling the CDs. We would order copies of the CDs in bulk, like 500 I think, and have to assemble the jewel cases with artwork ourselves, and then mail them out or sell them at shows. D.I.Y. is always rewarding- putting a little sweat on your brow and blood from your hands for the sake of doing what you love.
I remember people from Insound being around and very supportive of us during those early days. It was great to feel that and have Insound be an early connection for us to the music community at large, which we were very excited and grateful to have. And, then becoming a top seller was even more like, "really, this is actually happening?" in the same way when you come across your own record for the first time in a record store (anybody remember Sound and Fury?)
