INSOUND'S TOP TEN OF 2007 (SO FAR) |
| |
Yes, it’s only July, but sometimes we just can’t wait until December to list our Top 10 favorite records of the year. Every website in the world has their list of favorites by then, anyway. So because we’re so “hip” here at Insound, we’re beating them to the punch and calling this our Top 10 Favorite Records of 2007 (so far). Talk about punk rock. So without further ado, here they are. Damon Che, one of your drum rolls please:
I. The XYZ Affair - A Few More Published Studies - unabashed power pop at its finest.
II. The New Pornographers - Challengers - less bubblegum, more melancholy.
III. Monomen - Monomen - “Drums of Glass” is the best song we’ve heard in months.
IV. Justice - Cross - this is what electro-dance should’ve been like all along.
V. Ra Ra Riot - Ra Ra Riot - clearly this is pretty perfect “croon” pop.
VI. Bill Callahan - Woke On A Whaleheart - the smog clears up.
VII. A Band of Bees - Octopus - thoroughly enjoyable throwback melodies.
VIII. The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters - ambient-emo-Scot-rock.
IX. The National Lights - The Dead Will Walk, Dear - a love letter to Goth.
X. Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond - Barlow and Mascis make up.
COUPON CODE: toptensofar (10% off any of these albums till August 1st.)

ALAMO RACE TRACK
'Black Cat John Brown ' (Minty Fresh)
| Black Cat John Brown combines familiar sounds in unfamiliar ways, like several radio stations playing all at once. Some tracks have an identifiable post-punk syncopation, others are more echoey, and still more are fairly difficult to classify: a quieter Pixies, early Radiohead with pizzicato strings, "Soft Bulletin"-era Flaming Lips with The Strokes, and more.
| |
BISHOP ALLEN
'The Broken String' (Dead Oceans)
| Cult favorites no more! “The Broken String” will vault Brooklyn’s Bishop Allen to the tops of the indie-pops. The band released an EP for every month of 2006. This prolificness helps make every song on their full-length completely catchy.

| |
DAN SARTAIN
'Join Dan Sartain' (Swami)
| This guy is more talented than a thousand talented dudes. Blowing outta Birmingham, Alabama on a fierce wind, Dan Sartain specializes in playing his heart out. His smooth voice entrances the listener and catapults even the unsuspecting into a journey of inner space.
Smaller and smaller until the threads of the DNA of Rock N Roll appear in front of you as giant redwoods.

EMILY HAINES AND THE SOFT SKELETON
'What is Free to a Good Home?' (Last Gang)
| What Is Free To A Good Home? is a companion piece to the album Knives Don't Have Your Back. It contains five previously unreleased songs from the Knives recording sessions, as well as a remix of Knives track "Mostly Waving" by Soft Skeleton member and noted composer/arranger Todor Kobajov.

F@CKED UP
'Year of the Pig ' (What's Your Rupture?)
| Hardcore kings, F@cked Up, return with a mammoth 12" single, second in a series of records based on the Chinese Zodiac. “Year of the Pig” is an eighteen-minute prog-punk masterpiece that starts off with lush piano arrangements. Then, it explodes!
| |
JOHN VANDERSLICE
'Emerald City' (Barsuk)
| Vanderslice recorded this album in the midst of anguishing legal limbo after a visa application for his French girlfriend was rejected by US immigration. The album takes its title from a reference to the "Green Zone" in Iraq, but its themes are broad.

| |
LOS CAMPESINOS!
'Sticking Fingers Into Sockets' (Arts & Crafts)
| Rumours that a fresh-faced pop mega-beast was emerging from the highways and byways of Cardiff first began to surface early in the Summer of 2006. Los Campesinos! played their first gig in May at a Student Union club night. They were, from the outset, a happy union. Citing everything from Pavement, to Bright Eyes, The Cure, Silver Jews and all things riot grrrl as influences, they were diverse in taste as well as talent.

MF DOOM
'MM...Food (Deluxe) ' (Rhymesayers)
| In 1998, Zev Love X of the seminal rap group KMD re-emerged as a masked super villain known as MF Doom, released Operation: Doomsday, created multiple aliases, then worked on collaborative side projects with Madlib and Dangerdoom with Danger Mouse. This long awaited follow-up to Operation: Doomsday was originally released in late 2004 and has since been out of print. The special dual package includes an hour long DVD of live performances and behind the scenes footage from the MM..FOOD Drive Tour.

MONOMEN
'Monomen' (Trust Me Records)
| Highly Recommended! Monomen are a bunch of teenagers from Norway who are making impossibly poppy synth jams similar to their countrymen, The New Violators. We’ve been playing this record for days and days. You’ll be glad you bought this.

| |
OLIVER FUTURE
'Pax Futura ' (Transit of Venus/Fireproof)
| With the long-playing album succumbing to today's single song downloadable world, Oliver Future's Pax Futura is refreshingly anachronistic. Filled with mini-suites and recurring themes, Oliver Future and acclaimed producer Adam Lasus have created an album in the biggest sense of the word.

| |
SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO
'Simian Mobile Disco EP' (Interscope)
| Not content with their roles in the band and becoming more interested in electronic dance and party music, this duo latched onto DJ gigs while touring with the band. Eventually the duo split from Simian and dubbed themselves Simian Mobile Disco. Looking to prevent their own electronic dance tracks from sounding too polished and programmed, SMD exclusively used analog equipment. - AMG

TINY VIPERS
'Hands Across the Void ' (Sub Pop)
| Seattle's Jesy Fortino has played coffee shops, on mismatched bills with by-the-book folkies, and fielded far too many questions that address her gender rather than her music. Fortunately for us these things all fall away when she plays. Inhabiting the space carved out by minimal guitar, gentle textures, and stark, immediate vocals, Tiny Vipers' music evokes the contrast and quiet, empty beauty of a grey northwest landscape. A uniquely striking record that's as fully realized as it is spare and beautiful.

YEAH YEAH YEAHS
'Is Is ' (Interscope)
| This EP features five new solid Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs. The songs on “Is Is” are meant to recapture that insane energy of the band’s live shows. Many of these songs will be recognizable to you if you’ve seen YYY’s play from the stage recently.

| |
 ![[ buy preorder ]](http://www.drillteammedia.com/newsletter/images/buypreorder.gif) |
SEPTEMBER 25TH RELEASE DATE. Iron And Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date, and also the most satisfying. This whole album breathes. Its seductive rhythms percolate and undulate. The Shepherd's Dog is informed by a sensuality that brings a dreamscape to life. |

AUGUST 28TH RELEASE DATE. What do you expect from Liars? Noise? Concept? Both? Their new LP delivers neither. For the new album Liars have foregone theory for a more practical approach, one based on traditional song structures and instrument usage. |

| The New Pornographers
'Challengers [Executive Edition] PRE-ORDER' (Matador)
| |
 ![[ buy preorder ]](http://www.drillteammedia.com/newsletter/images/buypreorder.gif) |
SEPTEMBER 11TH RELEASE DATE. England's Go! Team play a fast and furious mix of 60s girl groups, 70s car chase TV themes, 80s lady MCs, and 90s guitar squalor. This release bombs melodies into the stone age with its needle-in-the-red anti-production approach. |
