   THE PRE-ORDER PARTY PALACE

The concept of ordering a pre-order is kind of like an idiot with zits, it’s an oxymoron (snare/snare/crash!). How does one order before they order? And as long as we’ve stopped making sense, we’re pushing the perplexity by making ALL pre-orders $2.00 off their regular list price until the record’s release date. That’s just nuts! Somewhere, our finance guy is frowning (btw, his name is Grant and he happens to have an indoor basketball court in his apartment building...a little suspicious, don’t you think?) Insound is the pre-ordering place to be. Right this very minute, there are tons of new records you can lay your claim to, from the big guns like Spoon, Thom Yorke and Sufjan Stevens, to the pocket glocks like Tokyo Police Club, Professor Murder and Silversun Pickups. Pre-ordering from Insound is cheaper than going to the store, you don’t have to wait in line, and you’ll get your records by street date. Plus, if you’re really lucky, your package will include the first issue of our new, mini Insound zine (thankfully, no jokes included). Order before you order, only at Insound.

   NEW RELEASES

A.M. INTERSTATE  'A.M. Interstate' (Turquoise Mountain)

After quickly selling out the first pressing of their debut concept, this Portland, Oregon band headed back into the recording studio. They spent the better part of a year recording songs to an analog reel-to-reel machine; Hammond organs, Wurlitzer pianos, lap steel, dulcimer, drums, and numerous guitars were the chosen instrumentation for the project. The collaboration between Jackson Groves, and brothers Seth Erickson, and Cy Erickson is a cohesive exploration through each members vision of indie-music -- psychedelic, rocking, and dreamy.

  ANATHALLO  'Floating World' (Nettwerk)

Michigan's ecstatic 7 piece marching band collective finally release their first album after 6 years & 18 tours, incl. jaunts w/BSS, +/-, Dashboard Confessional. Moves from meditative to earnest vulnerability. Songs inspired by Japanese folklore, enhanced by various lyrics harmonized in Japanese. They've been called an American Sigur Ros with their lush soundscapes, handclaps, horns, xylophones, chains, big bass drums, glockenspiel & more. Recommended!

APOLLO UP!  'Chariots of Fire' (Theory 8 Records)

  DENISE JAMES  'Promises' (Rainbow Quartz)

Denise James’ new full-length, Promises, is a singer/songwriter album of a rare category. Denise is actually French and grew up listening to Francoise Hardy around the house as well as the regional Detroit radio stations that have inspired all of the great mid-western musicians. Neko Case, a self-proclaimed fan, invited Denise to open her American tour. Where her early work was built around a sparse, French pop texture with 60’s strength reverberation, Promises combines Byrds-style jangle with existentialist lyrics and Pet Sounds harmonies.

FRANK BLACK  'Fast Man Raider Man' (Back Porch / EMI)

Playing like the widescreen director's cut version of Honeycomb, Frank Black's sprawling double album Fast Man Raider Man reunites him with the Memphis session legends who played with him last time, and adds even more stars to the cast of characters. Along with veteran Catholics member Lyle Workman and Honeycomb players Reggie Young, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldham, and Chester Thompson, the roster also includes Al Kooper, Jon Tiven, Bobby Bare, Jr., the Band's Levon Helm, Cheap Trick's Tom Peterson, and Bad Company's Simon Kirke, giving Fast Man Raider Man the feel of an all-star jamboree.   MINUTEMEN  'We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen ' (Plexifilm)

We Jam Econo - The Story of the Minutemen is the acclaimed feature-length documentary on the too-brief life of one of the most revered, intriguing, and inspired American bands ever. At the heart of their story is the immeasurable personal and musical bond between bassist Mike Watt and singer and guitarist D. Boon. Childhood friends, their unbridled creativity and political views were the foundation of this groundbreaking band which refused to be categorized as Punk. The film weaves together personal tales from Watt and drummer George Hurley with archival interview footage of the band and rare live performances. New interviews with over 50 musicians, artists, journalists, and friends help tell the Minutemen story, from their humble beginnings in the harbor town of San Pedro, California, to the tragic 1985 death of D. Boon in a highway accident in the Arizona desert.

  SOUND TEAM  'Movie Monster' (Capitol)

From Sonic Youth, the New Pornographers, Spoon and Interpol to Silver Apples, Can and shoegazers like Ride; Sound Team cover a lot of bases in 11 tracks. Most bands who sound like a chopped and blended soup of influences fail because they have no songwriting skills or nothing of their own to contribute but Sound Team succeed because they have large amounts of both of those things. Songs like the Vancouver-poppy No More Birthdays, the hazy Afterglow Years and the trance punk jam Handful of Billions have hooks big enough to render influences irrelevant. - All Music Guide

THE SAILS  'The Sails' (Rainbow Quartz)

The Sails are a visually and sonically captivating 5-piece band, possessing radiant harmonies, vibrant energy and a powerful, sunshine sound. The self-titled debut album for Rainbow Quartz delivers timeless songwriting dressed with intricately arranged vocals and instrumentation, covered with The Sail's immense, brilliant guitar sound. Each track has a masterly musical web woven under instant, infectious pop melodies. This is a blend of psychedelic brit-pop with 21st century nods to The Beatles, The Byrds and Bowie.

SUFJAN STEVENS  'A Sun Came (Reissue)' (Asthmatic Kitty)

Asthmatic Kitty announces the reissue of Sufjan Stevens' 1999 debut album, "A Sun Came." Widely acclaimed for "Michigan" (2003), and "Seven Swans" (2004), singer/songwriter Stevens' first solo collection has been skillfully remastered, with two previously unreleased tracks and new art by Stephen Halker.

Almost two years in the making, Sufjan Steven’s Enjoy Your Rabbit, an album of programmatic songs for the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, is now available for your listening pleasure. Departing from the singer-songwriter format of his first Asthmatic Kitty album, A Sun Came, this collection of 14 colorful instrumental compositions combines Sufjan’s noted gift for melody with electronic sounds to create an unusually playful and human -- not to mention humane -- electronic experience.

  SUFJAN STEVENS  'Illinois' (Asthmatic Kitty)

Like the self-proclaimed "Spiderman" who climbed Chicago's Sears Tower with no harness, Sufjan Stevens scales dusty prairies, steel factories, and two hundred years of history in the second installment of his 50 State Project, ILLINOIS, a 22-track anthematic tone poem to The Prairie State.

SUFJAN STEVENS  'Michigan' (Asthmatic Kitty/Sounds Familyre)

Asthmatic Kitty Records and Sounds Familyre are proud to launch THE 50 STATES by Sufjan Stevens, a cumulative recording project unparalleled in its panoramic enterprise: a record for each state. Stevens inaugurates the event with a collection of songs for his birth-state: "Michigan: The Great Lake State." Composed as a geographical tone poem, "Michigan" follows a metaphysical expedition through the idiosyncrasies of middle America.

SUFJAN STEVENS  'Seven Swans ' (Sounds Familyre)

Follow-up to his critically acclaimed album, Michigan. Stevens actually penned this material for Michigan, but found he had too many songs for one record. Instead of shelving them, he recorded them with Daniel Smith (Danielson Famile frontman) and released them here. Even more intimate and personal than Michigan, Seven Swans lyrically focuses on themes of love and religion and highlights Stevens' banjo playing. Word on the street: pretty amazing.

  BEASTIE BOYS  'Paul's Boutique' (Capitol)

I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive. However, this record's collage-like samples taught me that disorder and randomness are often more appealing than structure. ALSO: De La Soul: De La Soul Is Dead, Beck: Odelay, Dr. Octagon: The Octygonecologyst, Meta-Matics' Complete Discography

  BJORK  'Debut' (Elektra)

I think the reason so few female artists appear on this list is that I love women who posses an intelligence sharp enough to draw blood. Too many female singers are encouraged to be merely "pretty" or "rageful" without much nuance. This is probably something I should talk to a psychoanalyst about but, point being, Bjork satisfies my wildest fantasies. ALSO: Regina Spektor: Songs, Joni Mitchell: Blue, Joanna Newsom: Milk-Eyed Mender, Hole: Celebrity Skin

ELLIOTT SMITH  'Elliott Smith' (Kill Rock Stars)

I still find this album incredibly affecting -- partially because I occasionally wallow in my own misery, partially because I played croquet with Elliott Smith once in the backyard of his manager's house. I never would have guessed he'd be dumb enough to live out his own invented mythology. ALSO: Red House Painters: Songs for a Blue Guitar, Bonnie "Prince" Billy: I See A Darkness, Smog: Dongs of Sevotion

  EVERGREEN  'Evergreen' (Temporary Residence Limited)

Temporary Residence reissued this Kentucky band's one album, saving it from total obscurity. Produced by James Murphy before he started making overhyped punk-disco records, and featuring Slint drummer Britt Walford, it proves they really ought to dose Lousiville's water supply with lithium and sedatives. They sound like a zen garage rock band fronted by a feral adolescent. ALSO: Clickitat Ikatowi: Orchestrated and Conducted by..., Minor Threat: Complete Discography, Faith/Void split

JOHN COLTRANE  'A Love Supreme' (Impulse)

To be truthful, I listen to so much music for "work" that I rarely play pop songs for pleasure anymore. But I can't get enough of dub, drone, and instrumental music. These days I'm convinced that the greatest music should be able to serve as sonic wallpaper. ALSO: Brian Eno: Ambient 1: Music for Airports, Windy & Karl: Antarctica, Richard Youngs: Sadie, Ry Cooder: Paris, Texas, Augustus Pablo: King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, Erik Satie: Gymnopédies No. 1-3

  MANU CHAO  'Clandestino' (Virgin)

It took a long time for me to figure out that not all music is made by angry, sad, sensitive white guys. Manu Chao's ganja-infused pop blew me away when I first heard it because I know it takes real confidence to be this funny, sexy and laidback. ALSO: Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder: Talking Timbuktu, Al Green: Greatest Hits, Desmond Dekker: Intensified

NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL  'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' (Merge)

Religion is a confusing subject for me. I'm half-Jewish, half-Catholic, yet the only faith that appeals to me is Buddhism. Still, I have to admit there's something about loving Jesus Christ that makes dudes write really anthematic songs. I still don't understand why Jeff Mangum sings about JC on a record ostensibly about Anne Frank -- but it seems churlish to complain. ALSO: Sunny Day Real Estate: s/t, U2: Achtung Baby

  RODAN  'Rusty' (Quarterstick)

The post-rock craze of the mid-90s seems downright silly now. And I don't know if this Louisville band's 10 minute hardcore songs were half as popular as more purebred offshoots like June of '44 or Rachel's. At the time, though, I followed their comings and goings like a hippie chasing after the Grateful Dead. ALSO: Codeine: The White Birch, Slint: Spiderland, Talk Talk: Laughing Stock, Gastr Del Sol: Upgrade & Afterlife

  THE BAND  'The Band' (Capitol)

  CAT POWER  'Covers Record' (Matador)

$8.99 SOUND SAVER PRICE. Cat Power is the nom de plume of Chan Marshall. On "The Covers Record," Chan applies her remarkable interpretive skills to a wide variety of influences, accompanying herself on only piano or guitar. Almost gruesome in its melancholy, she de/reconstructs these songs often to the point of unrecognizability. The result is one of the most striking records we've heard in years, a masterpiece of mood, and another wonderful display of her extraordinary personality.   LES SAVY FAV  'Go Forth' (Frenchkiss)

$9.99 SOUND SAVER PRICE. This 11 song creation was Les Savy Fav's third full-length since the band formed in 1996. The dynamic, art-punk brigade has created a cult-like following for their live shows and are renowned for their energy and atmosphere. "Go Forth" embodies the inner and outer struggles of this rock-foursome from Brooklyn, New York. The songs range from pulsing dance beats that verge on punk as in "Crawling can be Beautiful," to the haunting tales of the perilous German rave commute captured in "Disco Drive," to melancholy reminisces of a kidnapped youth.

$8.99 SOUND SAVER PRICE. VINYL FORMAT ONLY. Arriving several months before Nirvana's Nevermind, the Smashing Pumpkins' debut album Gish, which was also produced by Butch Vig, was the first shot of the alternative revolution that transformed the rock & roll landscape of the '90s. While Nirvana was a punk band, the Smashing Pumpkins and guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan are arena-rockers, co-opting their metallic riffs and epic art-rock song structures with self-absorbed lyrical confessions. -All Music Guide-
