!!! (yes, that is the name of the band!...pronounce it "Chik Chik Chik," "Pow Pow Pow," "Uh, Uh, Uh," or any other repetitive sound times three) was formed in 1996 at a Sacramento, CA dance party. The seven members grew up together, playing various breeds of punk and experimental music, and gradually found themselves wanting more and more to play music in the vein of the stuff they were dancing to. The point, however, was not to simply mimic it; rather, !!! sought to reinvent the sounds of Chic, Bohannon, James Brown, and JB's, pumping them full of sweaty energy and an accomplished post-punk angularity. Which is not to say !!! are a punk band, nor a funk band for that matter. They are both. And neither. This is their debut full-length release, recorded incrementally over the course of the last six months. They have taken their time with it -- and it shows. "!!!" recalls the finer moments of The Clash (circa "Black Market"), A Certain Ratio, James Brown, The Meters, Liquid Liquid, Chic, Pigbag, and others...but it's probably accidental. The record sounds amazing, and the artwork is lush, vibrant, and totally at odds with all the other copycat filler clogging up record stores coast-to-coast. Features members with Outhud, and !!! frontman Nic was vocalist for the infamous Yah Mos.

2562: Unbalance2562
Unbalance

VINYL FORMAT. This is the second full-length album by Dave Huismans aka 2562, the follow-up to his roundly acclaimed debut, Aerial. Unbalance pushes both his creative talents, and the boundaries of dubstep, to another level entirely. This is an exceptional body of electronic music, and fully demonstrates 2562's adept ability to move through engaging soundscapes with both pin-point precision drum programming and innovative sample regeneration. 2562 is named after the postcode in The Hague, Netherlands where Huismans lives - a city detached from the main epicenters of dubstep, thus bringing both cultural distance and a uniquely diverse sound to the project. Unbalance sees 2562's vision of dubstep moving forward into previously-unexplored areas. Warmer than its predecessor, innovation and experimentation is still as evident as ever, as the influence of Theo Parrish and Flying Lotus meet with the deep end of Bristol bass music. With productions drawing inspiration from garage, dubstep, house, techno and broken beats - affiliations and collaborations have proliferated - killer remixes and one-offs have cemented the Dutchman firmly in the "A" list of contemporary production talent. Unbalance is impeccably built, and accessibly disposed: sheer dancefloor carnage is guaranteed. With this new album, 2562 breaks new ground - in moving away from the dub-techno associations of his earlier works, he creates a whole new world. From the outset, "Flashback" lets fly some of the face cards in Huismans' deck - the ample swell of swung garage informed by a new school sensibility, all grounded by that trademark giant bass presence. "Lost" reprises a familiar broken refrain in refixed mode, landing with a delightful low-end, almost junglist descent and a huge, mid-range melodic sustain - absolutely killer stuff. With "Like a Dream," the album really motors - squashed Mr. Fingers-style acid machinations inside wild bass and drum swing. Tear up the dub instructions, the diversity and breathtaking momentum of this fine album moves fleet of foot - like Usain Bolt over Berlin.

2Pac: All Eyes On Me2Pac
All Eyes On Me

VINYL FORMAT. Maybe it was his time in prison, or maybe it was simply his signing with Suge Knight's Death Row label. Whatever the case, 2Pac re-emerged hardened and hungry with All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc album of original material in hip-hop history. With all the controversy surrounding him, 2Pac seemingly wanted to throw down a monumental epic whose sheer scope would make it an achievement of itself. But more than that, it's also an unabashed embrace of the gangsta lifestyle, backing off the sober self-recognition of Me Against the World. Sure, there are a few reflective numbers and dead-homiez tributes, but they're much more romanticized this time around. All Eyez on Me is 2Pac the thug icon in all his brazen excess, throwing off all self-control and letting it all hang out -- even if some of it would have been better kept to himself. In that sense, it's an accurate depiction of what made him such a volatile and compelling personality, despite some undeniable filler. On the plus side, this is easily the best production he's ever had on record, handled mostly by Johnny J (notably on the smash "How Do U Want It") and Dat Nigga Daz; Dr. Dre also contributes another surefire single in "California Love" (which, unfortunately, is present only as a remix, not the original hit version). Both hits are on the front-loaded first disc, which would be a gangsta classic in itself; other highlights include the anthemic Snoop Dogg duet "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted," "All About U" (with the required Nate Dogg-sung hook), and "I Ain't Mad at Cha," a tribute to old friends who've gotten off the streets. Despite some good moments, the second disc is slowed by filler and countless guest appearances, plus a few too many thug-lovin' divas crooning their loyalty. Erratic though it may be, All Eyez on Me is nonetheless carried off with the assurance of a legend in his own time, and it stands as 2Pac's magnum opus. - All Music Guide

Moon Safari

VINYL FORMAT. A cavalcade of analog synthesizers, organs, electric pianos, and processed voices populate Moon Safari, a thoroughly appealing, otherworldly debut album from Air. Where most of their dance contemporaries push the boundaries of trip-hop or jungle, Air blends Euro-dance with new wave. Any futuristic element on their album feels strangely outdated, since they're borrowed from the early '80s, which gives their music an odd, out-of-time feeling. The waves of gurgling synths beneath the spacious, colorful chords and melodies give the impression that the music is floating in space. For all the atmospherics and layers of synths, there's a distinct pop sense to Moon Safari that makes it accessible and damn near irresistible.

Somehow the doppelganger works and Finsternis proves for a second time there is brilliance in the absence of light. Dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. But if Amen Dunes's twelve tracker Dia is one possible outcome of the guy alone-in-a-cabin- story, then a little tape saturated brain frying is something we should all live comfortably with because this is a batch of seriously raw and inspired loner psych grit that owes a debt to the DIY soundz of the George Brigmans of the world. That was 2006. These days the lone wolf behind Amen Dunes - Damon McMahon - calls a small two room apartment overlooking the Temple of Earth in North-Central Beijing home, where he watches old men fly kites and sing opera every morning. Who knows what'll come out of that.

Animal Collective: Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've VanishedAnimal Collective
Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished

VINYL FORMAT. This double album serves well as an introduction point to Animal Collective, repackaging their first two releases which, whilst gathering a certain amount of critical acclaim in the US, had little or no distribution elsewhere. Described by TimeOut NY as "the discovery of the year...", the Collective's first offering was a stunning collaboration between Avey Tare and Panda Bear called Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, released on their own label (Animal) in August of 2000. Chiming laments for a childhood's end, the album opens with the phrase "want to hear a secret, I know one," suggesting these secrets just might be buried deep within the flocks of high frequencies, electronic glitches, bleeps and swells that follow. The duo's approach is similar to Love's (circa Forever Changes), with Avey Tare's picked acoustic guitar flowing in perfect syncopation with Panda's tumbling drum kit. But the layers of tonal and atonal electronics that fatten the thinner pulse of the songwriter's vision make this album resemble something closer to modern electronic composition. The songs range from speedy patchwork pieces to slower piano melodies, a somehow coherent yet very fragile brand of psychedelic music.

Rewolf

One of the last albums ever recorded at London's renowned Olympic Studios (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who), Rewolf finds Asobi Seksu's core duo - vocalist Yuki Chikudate and guitarist James Hanna - affording listeners a new glimpse into songs spanning the band's entire career. Here, Asobi Seksu replaces its sonic layer of guitars with beautiful new arrangements achieved through the use of mostly acoustic instruments.

"This Brooklyn group's previous albums established them as shoegaze confectioners, molding candy swirls out of Yuki Chikudate's soaring, translucent voice and guitarist James Hanna's Kevin Shields - worshiping production. But here, Asobi Seksu so something My Bloody Valentine can't - leave Shields behind. 'Sing Tomorrow's Praise' and 'Me and Mary' evoke iciness over icing, with more expansive cool than insidious sweetness. And the duo's seasick guitar ('Layers'), ethereal synths ('Gliss'), and Japanese lyricism ('Meh No Mae') still provide plenty of geeky studio epiphanies." - SPIN

Logos

New album from Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox's side project, Atlas Sound.

Cox on Logos: "My last album was a bedroom laptop type thing. Very introverted. Logos is an album that was recorded all over the world. It's not about me. There are collaborations with other musicians. The lyrics are not autobiographical. The view is a lot more panoramic and less close-up. I became bored with introspection. This was also the case with Deerhunter'S Microcastle LP, which was written during the same period.

[Logos is] a collection of songs. There is no "filler." There are little scrapbook details everywhere. Sasha Vine provided a double-tracked improvised violin part to "Attic Lights" which was recorded backstage at a Deerhunter/Sian Alice Group show in Brighton. It might be my favorite moment of the album. I played it for some younger friends of mine. They cringed. They wanted more songs like "Walkabout." Something with a big beat. I told them when they get older they will appreciate things like harmonicas and violins more.

Laetitia from Stereolab, who I idolized as a teenager and would later befriend on tour, contributed words and vocals to "Quick Canal." The song was originally about 15 minutes long. I had zero ideas for vocals and asked if she could give it a shot. Andy Ramsay took a dub of the original and recorded Laetitia's vocals at his Press Play studio in London. It was quite a treat to hear the finished product, now at an economical nine minutes.

Almost everything you hear on the album is a first take. This makes it almost like a "live album" where a band sets up in a studio and just rolls tape. There are songs on here I don't even remember recording."
