13th Floor Elevators: Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators13th Floor Elevators
Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators

VINYL FORMAT. "Featuring the yelping vocals and visionary, occasionally demented lyrics of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the original acid rock bands. Formed in Texas in the mid-'60s, the Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with "You're Gonna Miss Me." While Erickson's loopy persona and Tommy Hall's odd "jug" percussion were the band's most distinguishing features, several members of the group's original lineup contributed strong material to their albums. Although these inconsistent efforts sometimes wander off into a cloudy haze, they also include sturdy folk-rock tunes and driving psychedelic rockers." -allmusic.com

AC/DC: If You Want Blood You've Got ItAC/DC
If You Want Blood You've Got It

VINYL FORMAT. AC/DC was fast becoming one of rock's top live acts by the late '70s. Few others could match the band's electrifying live performances: Angus Young's never-ending energy and wise-ass antics, Bon Scott's whiskey-soaked vocals, and the rest of the band's penchant for nailing simple, yet extremely effective and memorable, riffs and grooves. While most other rock bands of the era were busy experimenting with disco or creating studio-perfected epics, AC/DC was one of the few specializing in raw and bluesy hard rock, as evidenced by 1978's live set, If You Want Blood You've Got It. Recorded during their world tour in support of their Powerage album, If You Want Blood contains many of AC/DC's best compositions up until that point: "Bad Boy Boogie" (complete with the break-down section in which Young would "strip"), "The Jack," "Problem Child," "Whole Lotta Rosie," "High Voltage," "Let There Be Rock," and "Rocker." Strangely, their early anthem "Sin City" was not included, and there's a slight sense of studio enhancement on certain tracks. While the first disc of the 1997 box set Bonfire is the best document of live Bon Scott-era AC/DC ("Live From the Atlantic Studios"), If You Want Blood You've Got It is highly recommended. -allmusic.com

VINYL FORMAT. LIMITED RUN! Conceived as an introduction to Antony & the Johnsons' new full-length I Am A Bird Now. The Lake consists of three songs, including the lead-off single to I Am A Bird Now. The song is "Fistful of Love" and is Antony & the Johnsons' finest work to date. Featuring a scorching horn section and the legendary Lou Reed on vocals and lead guitar, the song's clear star is Antony. Art Brut: Bang Bang Rock & RollArt Brut
Bang Bang Rock & Roll

VINYL FORMAT. UK IMPORT. Exclusive vinyl version with bonus track "These Animal Menswe@r". "Fronted by terminal ranter Eddie Argos - a man keen to state "yes this is my singing voice, it's not irony" mid-song - Art Brut are a curious prospect. Part irreverent, part introverted, part cocksure yet with an appealing hint of vulnerability, they pepper this debut album with staccato blasts of shambling pop and touching paeans to love unrequited. Taking a Fall-like stream of unconsciousness approach to lyrics, Argos and co have an enthusiasm that is both admirable and infectious. Couple this to an almost irritating knack for penning catchy tunes and the debate concerning whether Art Brut are art rock, art punk or simply art statement becomes irrelevant: Bang Bang Rock And Roll is, simply, top entertainment." - Manchester Online

In Flesh Tones

There are no women in this Canadian group. They share the same sublime, androgynously-voiced space as Antony And The Johnsons, jazz great Little Jimmy Scott, and Philly soul angels The Stylistics. Musically, there are no touchstones. They twist and flutter, too skittish for space rock, too hot for IDM, too concise and charming for glitch-core. Their debut is a thing of dazzling beauty and fragile inspiration, simple in its celebration of sound and movement.

Beck: Sea ChangeBeck
Sea Change

VINYL FORMAT. Beck has always been known for his ever-changing moods - particularly since they often arrived one after another on one album, sometimes within one song - yet the shift between the neon-glitz of "Midnite Vultures" and the lush, somber "Sea Change" is startling, and not just because it finds him in full-on singer/songwriter mode, abandoning all of the postmodern pranksterism of its predecessor. What's startling about "Sea Change" is how it brings everything that's run beneath the surface of Beck's music to the forefront, as he's unafraid to not just reveal emotions, but to elliptically examine them in this wonderfully melancholy song cycle. As "Sea Change" is playing, it feels as if Beck singing to you alone, revealing painful, intimate secrets that mirror your own. It's a genuine masterpiece in an era with too damn few of them.

Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago Bon Iver
For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair," French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The New York Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommended" rating by Pitchfork.

Built to Spill: Perfect from Now OnBuilt to Spill
Perfect from Now On

Released in 1997. Not many groups would take a major-label contract as a cue to release an album where the shortest song is a very radio-unfriendly five minutes in length. For that, listeners can thank their lucky stars that Built to Spill isn't like many groups -- and that frontman Doug Martsch isn't like many artists. Using Warner's bigger budgets and distribution, Martsch and company have made an album at once inspiring and quietly emotional. Their best album yet.

PREfection

VINYL FORMAT. A shift of character, PREfection is a record of swooning romance, with a pristine guitar pop heart. The mood is a timeless one of slumbering, echo-y drums, ghostly organ drones, reverb-shuddering guitars, and Cass' vocals taking the foreground, towering with an understated emotive quality, either whispering in your ear or losing itself in its own melodies. Cass' words and lyrics on PREfection are nothing less than astounding. There are short stories with stray ends that need tying up, an intriguing obliqueness, but Cass wants to keep the veil in place. All the better to lure you in.

I Am the Cosmos

VINYL FORMAT. Big Star guitarist Chris Bell was one of the unsung heroes of American pop music; despite a life marked by tragedy and a career crippled by commercial indifference, the singer/songwriter's slim body of recorded work proved massively influential on the generations of indie rockers who emerged in his wake. Lyrically poignant and melodically stunning, this lone solo album is proof positive of his underappreciated pop mastery. 180 gram vinyl.

Coldplay: Viva La VidaColdplay
Viva La Vida

VINYL FORMAT. When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock. Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way to get to the same point. -allmusic.com

Collections of Colonies of Bees: Six GuitarsCollections of Colonies of Bees
Six Guitars

VINYL FORMAT. Table of the Elements celebrates its 15th anniversary with the debut disk in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's a 12-volume romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore, and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. Collections of Colonies of Bees generated quite the (forgive us) buzz, following the January release of their CD Birds, and deservedly so. Their sound is expansive, vast, and billowing; full of ringing guitars, soaring in the best traditions of the Chatham/Branca standoff; meanwhile, beneath the clouds sprawl dewy meadows of gently rolling electronica. Six Guitars is just what its title states, yet so much more. Wildly versatile drummer Jon Mueller follows the rules by hammering on an electric guitar with mallets, enhancing the Steve Reichian vibe (compare this with Mueller's face-melting solo onslaught Metals, also released in January). The band sparkles accordingly, lifting to a dazzling climax. It's epic minimalism in exquisite registration, and the perfect selection to introduce the Table of the Elements Guitar Series (fans will be happy to hear that Mueller is on deck with a solo contribution to the series as well). Beyond the music, there's the similarly spectacular packaging. It's a one-sided, 12-inch LP, pressed on clear vinyl; the reverse is laser etched with an original illustration by acclaimed UK artist Savage Pencil, whose credits include album art for The Fall, Big Black, and Sonic Youth. It's a limited-edition pressing, so get it while you can disks from the label's original Guitar Series in 1993/1994 are now some of Collectorville's must coveted treasures.
