The Mountain Goats
The Mountain Goats are one of the more unusual bands to find shelter under the ever-expanding umbrella term of indie rock. Hyper-prolific and militantly lo-fi, there are over a hundred Mountain Goats songs scattered across compilations and label samplers, most of them recorded (by choice) on a department-store boom box. Although many musicians have contributed to Mountain Goats releases, by far the person most identified with the outfit is singer/guitarist John Darnielle. (In fact, many Mountain Goats tracks feature only Darnielle's nasal bleat and his pri...[more]

Solitary singers wielding acoustic guitars are the musical equivalent of a glass of water. It's a means of expression that boasts more than its share of boring, flavorless, transparent hacks, and while there's bound to be the occasional draught of earthy, lukewarm sludge, it's hard to get passionate about disliking all but the most inane troubadour. Every now and then, however, a refreshing wellspring of talent emerges, like a Bob Dylan or a Woody Guthrie. While John Darnielle, aka The Mountain G [ read more ]

John Darnielle's lo-fi, acoustic passion is in full effect on Full Force Galesburg. As usual, there's little to distinguish one song from the next, and, as usual, Darnielle doesn't need to do any distinguishing, as he gets by on emotion alone. The Mountain Goats' albums are known for quickly strummed guitars and brittle, affected vocals. There are quiet moments to be found on Full Force Galesburg, such as "Weekend in Western Illinois," but for the most part, the album makes its s [ read more ]

Get Lonely is every bit as assured as its predecessor, The Sunset Tree, but the mood is entirely different. Sunset chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, while Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely [ read more ]

The Mountain Goats have recorded four fine albums that have established them as a genuine cult phenomenon and confirmed John Darnielle's status as one of the finest lyricists of his generation. 'Heretic Pride' is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary cults, slasher films, and pulp fiction novelists. Here, Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career.
