Liars

Liars were conceived in November 2000 after two friends and ex-Los Angeles art students, Aaron Hemphill and Angus Andrew, reunited in New York City. They responded to a "musicians wanted" ad posted in a local record store by two Nebraskans, Pat Noecker and Ron Albertson. The lurching Aussie Andrew took on the vocal/frontman duties while Hemphill became their guitarist and drum-machine programmer. Bassist Noecker and drummer Albertson make up the Liars rhythm section. Combined, they write music -- surprisingly formulated after the beats are laid down ...[more]

Drum's Not Dead, Liars' third album and the follow up to 2004's They Were Wrong, So We Drowned was partly inspired by a relocation from New York to Berlin. It finds Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross taking another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new musical territory. It's also their finest and fullest album to date, shredding all past reference points. The vinyl and CD release of Drum's Not Dead comes loaded with its own cinematic sister project: a DVD with three    [ read more ]

The highly anticipated sophomore album from NYC's own LIARS! "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned" sees the band take their creativity and twisted genius even further with this most poignant and chilling ghost story. A dark, noisy romp full of menace and artful, brilliant chaos. It's a record from a band in transition, defining themselves only in terms of what they wish to achieve, the limits of their imagination.

The latest of Brooklyn's music makers to create a big stir. A total of three songs recorded prior to their full-length, "They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top." Here the Liars gleefully mash up a number of eras, including punk, hip-hop, and new wave. Their performance is energetic, chaotic, and very, very loud. With short, choppy riffs and bottle-breaking drumbeats that together create a dynamic, rhythmic snarl. That's when everything breaks; the bass jives in a fortified funk; drums kic   [ read more ]

This Mute Records reissue of the shocking debut album from NYC-based LIARS combines raucous dance, hip-hop, and punk beats for high-energy heart-and-soul fire-eating that, somehow, morphs into song. Pat Noecker, bassist for the defunct group Opium Taylor, and Ron Albertson, former drummer of Mercy Rule, seduce the rhythms like veins looking for blood. Their body-shaking beats are purged through the jagged and sordid melodies of Aaron Hemphill on guitar, who screamed his way through LA punk formations Phil's   [ read more ]

What do you expect from Liars? Noise? Concept? Both? Their new LP delivers neither. Recorded on the heels of 2006's Drum's Not Dead somewhere between LA and Berlin, Liars' 4th album marks another bold transition for Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross. For the new album Liars have foregone theory for a more practical approach, one based on traditional song structures and instrument usage. "I'd never felt like a songwriter 'til this album," explains Angus. "If you told me last year Liars wou   [ read more ]

Continuing to explore the noise rock/prog rock fusion they pioneered with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, Liars return with another concept album, Drum's Not Dead. The idea behind this album is even more abstract than They Were Wrong's conflation of witch trials and pagan rituals: Drum's Not Dead revolves around the yin-yang relationship of two forces in the creative process, personified as Mt. Heart Attack (who represents stress and self-doubt) and Drum (the embodiment of creative ener   [ read more ]
