Joan of Arc

Based on their roots and their hometown, it's not surprising that Chicago's Joan of Arc blends post-rock's atmospherics and punk's volume and dynamics. Singer/guitarist Tim Kinsella, drummer Mike Kinsella, and bassist Sam Zurick came from the emocore band Cap'n Jazz; when that band broke up, the trio wanted to change their musical direction. They did just that when they started playing with keyboardist/guitarist Jeremy Boyle and guitarist Eric Bocek in summer 1996, removing the boundaries and structures of punk and including more experimental e...[more]

Despite being written over the course of a year in four different sessions with four different lineups, the songs on Flowers sound more cohesive than those on last year's Boo Human. This experience encapsulates the spirit of Joan Of Arc - a mentality that embraces contradictions and tears apart common musical structures, only to rebuild them without a blueprint. They continue to create an obscure combination of familiar, obvious ideas while sticking with the notion that 'if it feels good, do it.'

From the ashes of the legendary Chicago emo band Cap'n Jazz came the Promise Rings boys and this highly experimental and very quirky pop-synth, whiny-soothing indie rock band Joan of Arc.

The combination of fourteen musicians whose previous collaborations include Wilco, Iron & Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy, Beth Orton, and Prefuse 73 yields a truly diverse record that's as intense as it is intimate. Marked by intricate guitar melodies, non-cognitive wailing, and tense instrumentals, Boo Human is Joan of Arc's most accessible, cohesive album since 1997's How Memory Works.

Eight months in the crafting in Casey Rice's (EUPHONE, THE SEA AND CAKE, SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE) home studio, we find the band juxtaposing more traditional acoustic arrangements against artificial future sounds. With The Gap we witness a band evolving and crafting beautiful new territory.

Tim Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Friend/Enemy, Everyone) is in constant musical flux. This flux allows Kinsella to consistently produce even as he simultaneously juggles three active bands. The result? Kinsella has amassed a collection of songs culled from a variety of sources -- sketches begun on his computer, collaborations with kindred spirits from coast to coast, odds, sods, and half-fleshed creations ? and given them life as the much-lauded Joan of Arc. Recorded and mixed by Graeme Gibson at Clava Studi   [ read more ]

While recording last year's 'The Gap,' Joan of Arc found themselves in excess of material. Rather than make 'The Gap' a double album, the band delayed completion of the remaining songs and opted to return to them at a later date. By early 2001, Joan of Arc had finished the songs, resulting in the compelling 'How Can Any Thing So Little Be Any More?.' 'How Can...' uses the same template as last year's 'The Gap,' but with a thoughtful distance that gives it a more direct impact and appeal than its predecessor   [ read more ]

Only 1000 copies made! Recorded live in Muenster, Germany, the experimental Chicago rock band creates nice workouts of studio cuts from past albums. As always, Mr. Kinsella pushes to outdo himself, try new sounds, and always be one step ahead of the indie rock scene. "Like their fellow Chicago bands they've been compared to -- Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol -- Joan of Arc turn song structure on its head: An acoustic, folk guitar twists on a jazz rhythm, while an ethereal keyboard wash lingers eerily in the backgro   [ read more ]

Ten people who have all played guitar in Joan of Arc at one time or another got together and drew names out of a hat. Each person had to make a guitar duet with the person whose name he picked. All ten players were in the same room together (an unconventional apporoach for recording Joan of Arc, where often the drummer may never even meet the guitar player) taking turns pairing off to play; some improvised, others arranged. Some people used pedals to modulate or loop the sound of their guitars. Others simpl   [ read more ]
