Mogwai
The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner," a rarity in the Mogwai discography for its prominent vocals; the follow-up, a split single with Dweeb titled "Angels vs. Aliens," landed in the Top Ten on the British indie charts. The fourth album from Glasgow's kings of glowering, volatile quasi-instrumental rock is more subtle and nuanced than their previous work, compositionally beautiful but intense and trance-inducing at the same time. From the prominent keyboard rush of "The Kids Will Be Skeletons" to the glittering harmonics of the monumental "Rats at the Capital," "Happy Songs for Happy People" traces paths of heavy concentration. It's a massive evolution from the soft-loud-soft-loud explosions of their early work.[ read more ]

Their most impressive work since Young Team, Mogwai's third album, Rock Action, boasts an ironic title as well as an ironically successful new direction. By stripping away much of the noodling and noise of their earlier work in favor of tighter structures, more immediate melodies, and vocals, they've recaptured the excitement that surrounded their first releases.

Mogwai's sixth album continues to showcase the fiercely layered guitars and dynamics of their classic work, and features a new array of rhythms and melodies. These hint more than ever before at their electronic and metal influences. Not only do they remain masters of the eloquently stretched guitar phrase, but they've also expanded the syntax to include a new, almost beat-driven sound.

REISSUE. May 2008 finally sees the release of the long-awaited deluxe reissue of Young Team. Revisited not least because there had been lingering regrets over the initial album master and the speed at which it had been conducted, we collectively decided to give the original tracks a remastering makeover and bolster the beast with an additional CD's worth of bonus material. The remastered version of the album sounds ten times better (and louder, believe it or not), there's new liner notes pe [ read more ]

REISSUE. There's not an awful lot to be said about Come On Die Young that hasn't been said before: this was an album delivered by a band operating at full throttle, as challenging and experimental as anything by the luminaries who had influenced them. Albums like Come On Die Young are not common - a record which manages to surpass the lofty expectations of those who had bought Young Team, CCome On Die Young went on to establish Mogwai as one of the UK's premier acts. The sticker on the disc is intriguing enough, calling it a "companion to their recent Rock Action album" and "two parts serenity and one part death metal." My Father My King is a single track of the same name that lasts over 20 minutes. Though the inlay card features the Jewish Rosh Hashanah hymnal from which the melody originated, it is an instrumental. The meat is somewhat similar to the band Earth's sludgy, monotone feedback or Caspar Br÷tzmann Massaker sans singing, with a nicely noisy pr [ read more ]

Mogwai get translated and abused in various ways in this collection of remixes. Whether it's industrial, dance, or something altogether left field, the 12 remixes on Kicking a Dead Pig and the bonus CD, Fear Satan Remixes, take Mogwai to various new places, for better or worse. Remixes faring best are from Hood, Max Tundra, Third Eye Foundation, and Kid Loco.
