Stereolab
Combining an inclination for melodic '60s pop with an art rock aesthetic borrowed from Krautrock bands like Faust and Neu!, Stereolab were one of the most influential alternative bands of the '90s. Led by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, Stereolab either legitimized forms of music that were on the fringe of rock, or brought attention to strands of pop music -- bossa nova, lounge-pop, movie soundtracks -- that were traditionally banished from the rock lineage. The group's trademark sound -- a droning, hypnotic rhythm track overlaid with...[more]

Stereolab was poised for a breakthrough release with Emperor Tomato Ketchup, their fourth full-length album. Not only was their influence becoming apparent throughout alternative rock, but Mars Audiac Quintet and Music for the Amorphous Body Center indicated they were moving closer to distinct pop melodies. The group certainly hasn't backed away from pop melodies on Emperor Tomato Ketchup, but just as their hooks are becoming catchier, they bring in more avant-garde and experimental influence [ read more ]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Their eleventh album is a collection of purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs brimming with Motown-like drums, baroque-pop brass and string arrangements, and mellifluous vocal performances. It is, nonetheless, classic Stereolab; like all their best work, a perfect equipoise between an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly exotic future.

On Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Stereolab moved in two directions simultaneously -- it explored funkier dance rhythms while increasing the complexity of its arrangements and compositions. For its follow-up, Dots and Loops, the group scaled back its rhythmic experiments and concentrated on layered compositions. Heavily influenced by bossa nova and swinging '60s pop, Dots and Loops is a deceptively light, breezy album that floats by with effortless grace. Seminal debut album! With its full-length debut Peng!, Stereolab continued to develop a unique approach to experimental pop music, building on the seriously playful mix of Krautrock, dream pop, and lounge forged on the band's early singles. While Peng! doesn't feature many of Stereolab's most instantly recognizable compositions, it defines the group's early style and reflects the eclectic directions pursued in later work. - All Music Guide

And somehow it's fitting for a group that has released so much music in so many different forms-7" singles, CD EPs, mini-albums, box sets-that such a cohesive, involving, pleasurable-as-an-album album would actually consist mostly of songs that were previously released...in some form anyway. Fab Four Suture is technically referred to by the band as a "compilation", because all of its songs are also available on singles: three 7" singles that were released in 2005, and three that come out the same day [ read more ]

Stereolab took an unprecedented two years between 1997's Dots & Loops and 1999's Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night, as they tended to personal matters. For a band that churned out limited-edition singles and EPs, along with an annual album, between 1992 and 1997, complete silence was a complete change of pace, but they happened to pick a good time to go into seclusion. During those two years, Stereolab's brand of sophisticated, experimental post-rock didn't evolve too much, [ read more ]

Originally released in 1992, Switched On collects Stereolab's earliest singles, capturing the group's hypnotic, driving sound in its infancy. Though they're more guitar-driven and rock-oriented than the band's later work, tracks like "Super-Electric" and "Au Grand Jour" prove that Stereolab's basic style - Krautrock lock-grooves, bubbling analog snyths, fuzzed out guitars and angelic vocals - arrived fully formed. "Doubt" and "Brittle" are among the group's most vibrant pop songs, while the eight m [ read more ]

Stereolab formed in London in 1991 and rose from the underground scene to become one of the most influential alternative groups of the '90s. Their innovative sound, which merges avant-garde experimentalism and infectious, bubbly pop, is driven by hypnotic rhythm tracks and melodic, sing songy vocals, often in French. This is the band's first retrospective compilation, spanning their entire Elektra era from 1993-2004. ABC Music, the two-disc, 32-track compilation of Stereolab's BBC Radio 1 sessions from July 1991 to August 2001, is a surprisingly illuminating and listenable set. Although this may come as a shock to some casual listeners, Stereolab can be a ferocious live band, and their trademark blend of Krautrock, easy listening, and Brazilian influences (in different proportions throughout their career) usually has an added aggressiveness in a live setting. This is particularly apparent on the earlie [ read more ]
