Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in "The Shed" -- a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother's trailer -- Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to cut their 1994 self-titled debut single, released on Johnson's K Records label. VINYL FORMAT. Before big record budgets, the Northwest's saddest/angriest trio still sounded great! Two songs of down-low fidelity and ice-cold charm with organs, birds, cars and horns lending a helping hand.

Among the eight tracks are "Here It Comes," "So Much Beauty in Dirt," "Three Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters," and a song titled "The Air," a megamix of sorts which blends several older songs into a brand new entity. The disc will also include all of the tracks from the "Night on the Sun" 12-inch, including that record's title track, "I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock)," "You're the Good Things" and "Willful Suspension of Disbelief."

At last! Modest Mouse's anxiously awaited follow-up to 2001's "The Moon and Antarctica." The 16-track 'Good News' was produced by Dennis Herring (Camper Van Beethoven, Throwing Muses) and is led by the rollicking, ultra-catchy single "Float On." The album features the debut of new drummer Benjamin Weikel, as well as the return of original guitarist Dan Gallucci, who returned after his other band, The Murder City Devils, broke up. Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Although you can hear echoes of the Minutemen and Nirvana, along with slightly larger ensembles such as Pavement and Thrush Hermit, Modest Mouse puts an entirely new twist on the post-punk power trio concept. The band eschews the camouflage of noise, effects, and attitude employed by many of their indie rock peers to create ironic distance. Instead, they strictly rely on inventive, surprising songwriting, and low-key-but-committed performance to lay their claim as innovator   [ read more ]
