Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead's noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. As rich and densely layered as their last album, Misery Is A Butterfly, but the overall mood of wistfulness, melancholy, and regret has been replaced by one of mystical wonder and renewed energy. On 23, the band trades the cloistered chamber rock of Butterfly for tone-bending dream pop and subtle electronics; while the wide open spaces sound a little bare at first, this streamlined approach ends up making this {$Blon [ read more ]

It's almost as if the album were made specifically to convey anxiety, because every song is saturated with it. The songs are rich with noise and texture and punctuated by staccato lyrical delivery. The album's first track, "Kazuality," has a strong bassline that compliments Amedeo Pace's hard vocal phrases to give the song a g [ read more ]

Kazu Makino is from Japan, while Simone and Amedeo Pace (twin brothers) are from Italy. The band name, Blonde Redhead, comes from a song by the band DNA, a seminal no-wave New York City band from the early '80's (a band Blonde Redhead loves ? and more).
