Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead's noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. The name was taken from a song by the '80s no wave band DNA. With Makino and Amedeo on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums, and Takahashi on bass, the band's chaotic, artistic rock caught the attention of Sonic Youth drum...[more]

Their first album in four years! Blonde Redhead's style has evolved over their decade-long career to include everything from art-punk to '60s European pop to Serge Gainsbourg. But they've always had a sound that was uniquely their own -- you always know when Blonde Redhead is on the stereo. "Misery Is a Butterfly," their latest album, is as much of a creative leap forward from their last record as that record was from its predecessors. Throughout, the band's gently mournful economy of style is adorned by a [ read more ]

As rich and densely layered as their last album, Misery Is A Butterfly, but the overall mood of wistfulness, melancholy, and regret has been replaced by one of mystical wonder and renewed energy. "It's art music and heart music, with equal appeal to a Serge Gainsbourg fan as to a Sonic Youth fan, without ever sounding like either act" - LA Times.

With their second release, La Mia Vita Violenta, Blonde Redhead maintain their organically low-fi aesthetic and continue to prove themselves as one of indie rock's real triumphs. Even after the departure of guitarist Maki Takahashi, they still make more noise with three people than most bands could make with ten. Guitars tear into the songs -- pointed, direct, and tough -- while the vocals of Kazu Makino and Amedeo Pace weave tightly into drummer Simone Pace's impeccably precise backing. T [ read more ]

Kazu Makino is from Japan, while Simone and Amedeo Pace (twin brothers) are from Italy. The band name, Blonde Redhead, comes from a song by the band DNA, a seminal no-wave New York City band from the early '80's (a band Blonde Redhead loves ? and more). Now they're making their own music, inspired by that sound, that's lovely and achy and angular all at the same time.

Self-titled debut album. Rock music is this process, and Blonde Redhead have been on a quest to get there since circa 1992. Twin power, in the form of identical Italian expatriates Simone and Amadeo Pace, anchors the band on drums and guitar respectively, while the third element, Kazu Makino, soars and slahes on guitar and voice from without and within.

For a record produced by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi, Rites of Spring), Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons is a surprisingly quiet affair. Rarely do the cuts on Blonde Redhead's 2000 release get much louder than an electric guitar. With their fifth record, Blonde Redhead finally emerges from the shadows of Sonic Youth's post-punk legacy by avoiding the expected detunings, distortions, and shrillness of the genre. The three-piece manages to create a record that is subtle, tuneful, and sublime. O [ read more ]

Fake Can Be Just As Good is the third album from the no wave-influenced Blonde Redhead. The album's constant nervous tension and dissonance evoke a sense of foreboding. It's almost as if the album were made specifically to convey anxiety, because every song is saturated with it. The songs are rich with noise and texture and punctuated by staccato lyrical delivery. The album's first track, "Kazuality," has a strong bassline that compliments Amedeo Pace's hard vocal phrases to give the song a g [ read more ]

With each album since Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, Blonde Redhead has made huge strides forward with their sound. Misery Is a Butterfly pitted fragile melodies against dark, swirling arrangements, and its tragic glamour turned the album into a cult favorite. On 23, the band trades the cloistered chamber rock of Butterfly for tone-bending dream pop and subtle electronics; while the wide open spaces sound a little bare at first, this streamlined approach ends up making this {$Blon [ read more ]
