Toronto's Hayden Desser spent the bulk of two decades creating uniquely affecting music through a combination of rock and folk flourishes, personal sentiments, and a voice that channeled both the falsetto highs of Neil Young and the wavering raspy low tones of Leonard Cohen. The critically acclaimed musician first appeared in the early '90s, armed with only a four-track tape recorder like his heroes in Sebadoh and Pavement. Coupling his unnaturally low range with an extremely detuned guitar, Hayden recorded a self-released cassette, In September, in 199...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. The first thing you notice about In Field & Town is Hayden's songwriting seems to be a bit more upbeat. The title track starts the record and the distorted sound and drums really energize you. Hayden's vocals delivery is still the same, but it's matched with a more experimental groove. The track settles into a nice rhythm but adds some tambourine, bossa nova percussion and subtle bass piano notes that echo in the distance to thicken up the last two minutes. VINYL FORMAT. Hayden returns after a four-year hiatus with 11 songs of despair and hope. "Skyscraper National Park" occupies a diverse landscape: raw and bleak, yet warm and bright at once. From a high falsetto to a low growl, from a distant piano and thin guitar to lush strings and horns, Hayden traverses the span of wide-open spaces to solitary introspection. There is heartbreak and there is comfort. There is light and there is shadow. The misconceptions of a soul that is troubled and moody are dispelled    [ read more ]

Following the evocatively mellow Skyscraper National Park, Hayden decided to tour the North American continent all by his lonesome, bringing his acoustic guitar, wavering voice, and unexpected humor to small clubs and theaters. This double-CD set captures the singer/songwriter in his hometown of Toronto performing 22 songs from his extensive catalog in front of a theater filled with appreciative fans. The recording is a beautiful testament to the stripped-down beauty of the songs, and with material   [ read more ]

Solitary, rootsy post-punk of the best kind, delving into somewhat dark and twisted terrrain, but invested with a lot of passion and unflinching grit. The sparse and haunting arrangements put acoustic guitars at the forefront, but vary the pace with occasional searing licks, eerie solo piano, and harmony vocals. It's one of the relatively few releases of this type that will find a comfortable home in the collections of those with an ear for either stark folk-rock or grunge. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music G   [ read more ]
