Radiohead
Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's three-guitar attack, which relied on texture -- borrowing as much from My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd as R.E.M. and Pixies -- instead of virtuosity. It took Radiohead awhile to formulate their signature sound. Th...[more]

Since Radiohead have released numerous European CD singles over the years, with many of their B-sides being as strong as their album material, they decided to compile the best six B-sides recorded during the OK Computer sessions and release it domestically. Each song is a little gem, such as the glossy noise of "Pearly," and the gigantic sound of "Polyethylene, Pts. 1 & 2" and the computerized instrumental "Meeting in the Aisle." Also included are the gentle yet spacy "A Reminder," the ragged rock of [ read more ]

"Faced with a deliberately difficult deviation into 'experimentation,' Radiohead and its record label promoted Kid A as just that -- a brave experiment, and that the next album, which was just around the corner, really, would be the 'real' record, the one to satiate fans looking for the next OK Computer, or at least guitars. At the time, people bought the myth, especially since live favorites like 'Knives Out' and 'You and Whose Army?' were nowhere to be seen on Kid A. That, however, ignores a salient point [ read more ]

Amnesiac had trace elements of being a roundup of holdovers from Kid A that didn't quite fit that album's architecture, and its origins are echoed on EMI's expanded 2009 reissue of Amnesiac. Here, there are unheard songs and live cuts scattered among the B-sides, but nothing that could quite qualify as a major find -- which makes sense, because the album itself grew from the outtakes of Kid A, so all the best material is on the album. Which isn't to say that the 15 tracks on the bonus disc ar [ read more ]

Pablo Honey in no way was adequate preparation for its epic, sprawling follow-up, The Bends. Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best moments of Pablo Honey, Radiohead create a grand and forceful sound that nevertheless resonates with anguish and despair -- it's cerebral anthemic rock. Occasionally, the album displays its influences, whether it's U2, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., or the Pixies, but Radiohead turn clichTs inside out, making each song sound [ read more ]

The Bends was Radiohead's peak as an adventurous guitar band and their creativity wasn't limited to the album proper -- it spilled over to that album's B-sides, resulting in their most consistent string of singles, which, in turn, makes the double-disc reissue of The Bends the best of all the 2009 deluxe Radiohead reissues. This collects all the B-sides from the singles for "My Iron Long," "High & Dry"/"Planet Telex," "Fake Plastic Trees," and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)," adding fo [ read more ]
