Named in part after a sister of one of the bandmembers, Reykjavik, Iceland's Sigur R=s (Victory Rose) was formed by guitarist and vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson, bassist Georg Holm, and drummer Agust. Formed in early 1994 while the members were teenagers, the trio's first recorded song earned them a deal with Iceland's Bad Taste label. Their sprawling debut LP, Von (Hope), was released in 1997, followed the next year by a collection of remixes from that album, Recycle Bin. Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band on keyboards and the band recorded 1999's strings-hea...[more]

Takk..., the fourth album from Sigur Ros. Written, performed and produced by the band (along with co-producer Ken Thomas) at their studio in Alafoss, Iceland, Takk... is the record to justify every amazing claim ever laid at this exceptional band's door. Huge and intimate, orchestral and gossamer-light, rich layered and essentially simple, Takk... is a work of a band operating at the very top of their game. It accomplishes what maybe they haven't done since they first appear   [ read more ]

"( )" comprises eight untitled songs that Sigur Rós have been playing at concerts over the past three years. A 30-second period of silence divides the 71-minute album in two halves, each half containing four tracks. The first half is light and optimistic, while the second half is bleaker and more melancholic and "plays more with your emotions," as Jónsi said. Comparing to the band's last album, "ágætis Byrjun," "( )" is more minimal and atmospheric than its predecessor. A rawer and darker album and consider   [ read more ]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Rós adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded. Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks (e.g. Íllgresi) that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry not thou   [ read more ]

This release is comprised of two EPs. "Hvarf" translates appropriately as "disappeared", as its five tracks are new studio recordings of lost songs from various points in the band's career. "Heim" or "home" is six tracks of live acoustic versions of songs from all four Sigur Ros's studio albums recorded in Iceland during the band's summer 2006 tour and early spring 2007. Limited edition double CD digipak (first pressing only).

The three pieces of music comprising "Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do" were originally written for the Split Sides performance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. The members of Sigur Rós performed them live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's 2003 Next Wave Festival, New York on October 14, 2003, and again in Paris at The Theatre de la Ville in December 2003. On these occasions, the band improvised a 20-minute section of music over a previously recorded backing track using two sheet-fed music boxes, a glockenspiel, an   [ read more ]

The first U.K. release for Iceland's Sigur R=s is a stunning, self-contained EP of epic aspirations shot through with over a half-hour of funereal, taunting excellence. Two studio cuts from the superb -gµtis Byrjun make up half the release -- the gasping, virtuous sighs of "Svefn-G-Englar," the sub-zero buildup of "Vi=ar Vel Til Loftßrßsa" -- but the real treats are the other live tracks found at the back of the dramatics. Both "N²ja Lagi=" and "Syndir Gu=s" show off a desolate, aural stag   [ read more ]

With their fifth full-length album, Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust (translated as With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly), Sigur R=s have taken the poppy, sunshiny leanings of their previous album a step further into the light. The band has always been known for otherworldly soundscapes, and while there is enough of that here to keep the faithful happy, the band also writes straightforward, three-minute pop songs like the incredible catchy, sticky-sweet duo ("Gobbldigook," {&"Innf M   [ read more ]

After floating in the same cirrus clouds for a decade, it would seem that the time has come for a change. Not to say that the lulling orchestral swells or Jon Birgisson's schoolboy falsetto have lost any of their magic over time; it's just that after releasing 40-some similar-sounding songs with undecipherable lyrics, it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate one from the next. However, Hvarf/Heim isn't the album to mark a musical departure for Sigur R=s. The bandmembers show no real sign    [ read more ]

Sµgl=pur collects the expansive single of the same name from Sigur R=s' 2005 Takk... and augments it with three unreleased cuts: "Refur," a soft, piano-led instrumental followed by the typically atmospheric and string-laden space rocker "+ Fridur," and the more ambient-sounding "Kafari." Also included is a bonus DVD disc with videos for the singles "Gl=s=li," "Hoppfpolla," and "Sµgl=pur." ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

Two years passed since Sigur R=s' debut. By this time, the band recruited in a new keyboardist by the name of Kjartan Sveinsson and it seems to have done nothing but take the band to an even higher state of self-awareness. Even on aesthetic matters, Sigur R=s entitle their sophomore effort not in a manner to play up the irony of high expectations (a la the Stone Roses' Second Coming), but in a modest realization. This second album -- -gµtis Byrjun -- translates roughly to Good Start   [ read more ]
