Sukpatch
The Minneapolis-based indie-pop duo Sukpatch comprised small-town Southerners Chris Heidman and Stephen Cruze, who created a novel amalgamation of lo-fi pop, samples, and hip-hop beats. The pair began recording songs at home on cheap equipment in the early '90s, passing cassettes of their work around to a circle of friends. Sukpatch have a tradition of starting their releases with a slamming, impossible-to-ignore track. On their Honky Tonk Operation EP that track would be "Fleet," a fantastically catchy and upbeat pop song with pinched, reedy singing that still manages somehow to swagger on the strength of its irresistible beat. Honky Tonk Operation is certainly a must for the serious Sukpatch fan, but those new to their sound should start with Haulin' Grass and Smokin' Ass.
