The Fall

Out of all the late-'70s punk and post-punk bands, none were longer lived or more prolific than the Fall. Throughout their career, the band underwent a myriad lineup changes, but at the center of it all was vocalist Mark E. Smith. With his snarling, nearly incomprehensible vocals and consuming bitter cynicism, Smith became a cult legend in indie and alternative rock. Over the course of their career, the Fall went through a number of shifts in musical style, yet the foundation of their sound was a near-cacophonous, amelodic jagged jumble of guitars, sing-sp...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. "The first of what would be a veritable flock of live albums, some legit and some hovering on the edge of it, Totale's Turns, with the same lineup as Dragnet, found the Fall in a hilariously aggressive mood, as the statement of purpose 'Intro' demonstrates. 'The difference between you and us is that we have brains!' proclaims Smith, and from there it's off into their version of rock and roll hell. Song choices range over the first two albums and various singles, delivered with the at-on   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. As stubbornly maverick as ever, the Fall's tenth album hinges on their now-accustomed dissonance, into which a tighter, commercial edge was introduced. New guitarist Brix Smith, wife of leader Mark E., added a partly melodious sheen that brought an air of 60s subculture to the group's post-industrial rattle. Nothing was sacrificed in the process and while "Bombast" hurtles with a vicious power, talismen Can were acknowledged in "I Am Damo Suzuki," the name of the German band's Japan-born singe   [ read more ]

Recorded after a tour that found leader/vocalist/lyricist Mark E. Smith handing out his umpteenth set of pink-slips and changing about half the band, Imperial Wax Solvent is a surprisingly vital and solid release, benefiting from a hungry young band under the guidance of a veteran who is inspired, jaded, and often sounds twice as hungry as the young bucks. After getting the artful, "difficult" number out of the way ("Alton Towers") and riffling through the garage rock-loving song ({&"Wolf Kidult Ma   [ read more ]

To get the clichTs out of the way first, the Fall are really literate, mumbling curmudgeon leader Mark E. Smith and anyone he chooses. Smith is famous for firing bandmembers, creating a slew of ex-Fall people who almost outnumber the amount of compilations released under the band's name, and most of those compilations are for "hardcore fans only." The final, and probably most accurate, clichT is that there is no Fall fan but a hardcore one, which brings up the question of who this amazing box   [ read more ]

Recorded during the Fall's visit to Los Angeles in 2001, this remarkable album captures a remarkably unstable live show, largely peopled by recent material -- but none the worse for any of that. Most of the terms that are traditionally applied to a Fall live show are applicable here, from raucous and rambunctious to seething and snarling. What renders this set so valuable, however, is Smith's refusal to acknowledge anything remotely approaching a comfort zone, neither for himself nor for his audien   [ read more ]

Like the Live at the Knitting Factory album, this audio document of the Fall's April 2002 appearance at the ATP Festival is better experienced aboard the {=Access All Areas, Vol. 2} DVD. Nevertheless, with scintillating versions of the seldom-heard "Cyber Insekt," "My Ex-Classmates' Kids," "F'oldin Money," and "Enigmatic Dream" joining old warhorses "Bourgeois Town" and a dynamic "Mr. Pharmacist," all woven in and around some magnificent Smith ad-libs and introductions, the pe   [ read more ]
