Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Westerns as well as Portuguese fado, Afro-Peruvian music, and '50s and '60s jazz, country, and surf music all factored into Calexico's music. Burns studied classical music at the University of California, Irvine, before starting his rock career, and Calexico formed after Burns met John Convertino in Los Angeles in 1990. There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico. Carried to Dust represents the pinnacle of their achievement, a thrilling and moving journey through a landscape that draws upon the modern world as much as it does the decayed reminders of times past, stumbling upon unexpected del   [ read more ]

Feast of Wire does indeed offer a tantalizing array of sounds new and old from Calexico, including more pop-oriented takes on their already eclectic style as well as some different sonic twists. In the hands of a lesser band, all the different sounds Calexico explores on "Feast of Wire" could result in a mish-mash of an album, but fortunately for them and their fans, it's one of their most accomplished and exciting efforts.

There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of CALEXICO. Ever since they were a largely instrumental duo experimenting with their unique collection of instruments and soundtrack sensibilities, Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico, equal parts Sergio Leone, Larry McMurtry, Carlos Fuentes and Cormac McCarthy. RESTOCK. The back cover photo of Spoke is a furrowing farm machine. When I see such machinery working, clouds of birds follow to eat up the disturbed insects. Calexico snatches up the bits of Americana turned out by a rototilling of the national music psyche. The nineteen resultant tracks can be insect small (0:28 to 3:54) and erratic in flight. The tracks are lo-fi songs suggested and themes follow without concern for what preceded. One bit is held up by guitar, another by accordion, then one by vibes. A    [ read more ]

Tucson's Joey Burns and John Convertino are two of the most sought-after musicians on the planet. Besides being both the brains and muscle behind Calexico, they also back up Howe Gelb in his woefully-underappreciated Giant Sand. They have also played and toured with mountain man Richard Buckner, Barbara Manning, Victoria Williams, and Lisa Germano's OP8. This CDep features B-sides, remixes, acoustic versions, and videos for Ballad of Cable Hogue, Crystal Frontier, and The Black Light.

A little nugget to follow up 2003's "Feast Of Wire." This five-song EP features Calexico's European singles, as well as the band's incredible version of the Love classic, "Alone Again Or," which has become a staple of their live set. Also included is an original animated short, created especially for The Cartoon Network, called "El Kabong Rides Again" that features "Minas de Cobre" from Calexico's full-length, "The Black Light." Should more than tide you over until the band gets back into the studio.[ read more ]
