Calexico
Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Westerns as well as Portuguese fado, Afro-Peruvian music, and '50s and '60s jazz, country, and surf music all factored into Calexico's music. Burns studied classical music at the University of California, Irvine, before starting his rock career, and Calexico formed after Burns met John Convertino in Los Angeles in 1990. At the tim...[more]

Feast of Wire does indeed offer a tantalizing array of sounds new and old from Calexico, including more pop-oriented takes on their already eclectic style as well as some different sonic twists. In the hands of a lesser band, all the different sounds Calexico explores on "Feast of Wire" could result in a mish-mash of an album, but fortunately for them and their fans, it's one of their most accomplished and exciting efforts.

"A band has got to keep changing and moving or it will get boring and break up," says Calexico's John Convertino. Fortunately, Calexico have barely stopped moving for ten years. The distances they have traveled over the years are apparent on Garden Ruin. For this new recording, the band brought in producer JD Foster (Marc Ribot) and relocated from Tucson to Bisbee, AZ. Inspired by their surroundings, the band explored musical avenues that they had previously left untouched. This album, states Jo [ read more ]

A little nugget to follow up 2003's "Feast Of Wire." This five-song EP features Calexico's European singles, as well as the band's incredible version of the Love classic, "Alone Again Or," which has become a staple of their live set. Also included is an original animated short, created especially for The Cartoon Network, called "El Kabong Rides Again" that features "Minas de Cobre" from Calexico's full-length, "The Black Light." Should more than tide you over until the band gets back into the studio.

There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico. Carried to Dust represents the pinnacle of their achievement, a thrilling and moving journey through a landscape that draws upon the modern world as much as it does the decayed reminders of times past, stumbling upon unexpected del [ read more ]

Deeper and richer than their debut "Spoke," Calexico's second album expands upon their sun-baked, cinematic sound with the addition of Latin jazz rhythms, mariachi trumpets, and pedal steel. In and of themselves, the group's songs are not exactly compelling, but they're produced with such a fine sense of texture and atmosphere that "The Black Light" still makes for intriguing listening. ~ Jason Ankeny, AMG

Continuing the Tijuana Brass meets Giant Sand and Ennio Morricone in a dark neuvo-waveo spaghetti Western approach they've gradually refined over the past two albums, multi-instrumentalists John Convertino and Joey Burns keep exploring terrain they've uniquely staked out. While not as cinematic, sprawling, and impressive as 1998's The Black Light, the duo create vivid soundscapes as dry, hot, and shimmering as the weather of their Tucson, Arizona home. Although they subtly expand their pal [ read more ]

On Even My Sure Things Fall Through, Tucson's Calexico compiles eight European B-sides, remixes, covers, and other unreleased tracks, as well as three CD-ROM videos. Such albums often come off as hastily compiled and shoddily sequenced, but Calexico's attempt at a rarities release is surprisingly coherent. From the then-unreleased opener, "Sonic Wind (Instrumental Mix)," to the elegantly lush remake of American Music Club's "Chanel No. 5," the 45-plus minute EP manages to showcase wonderfu [ read more ]

RESTOCK. The back cover photo of Spoke is a furrowing farm machine. When I see such machinery working, clouds of birds follow to eat up the disturbed insects. Calexico snatches up the bits of Americana turned out by a rototilling of the national music psyche. The nineteen resultant tracks can be insect small (0:28 to 3:54) and erratic in flight. The tracks are lo-fi songs suggested and themes follow without concern for what preceded. One bit is held up by guitar, another by accordion, then one by vibes. A [ read more ]
