The Promise Ring

The Promise Ring were one of the most popular emo bands of the '90s, epitomizing the poppier, more accessible wing of the style. Along with Sunny Day Real Estate, the Get Up Kids, Braid, and Jimmy Eat World, they helped bring emo from the punk underground to a wider indie rock audience in the latter half of the decade. Like the exact definition of emo itself, the Promise Ring's music evolved in ways that were difficult to pin down completely; starting out as both intricate and visceral, they simplified their sound into more straightforward {\punk-...[more]

New Promise Ring full-length. This new record on the Anti-label is very different from all their previous works, as it's more experimental and uses more instruments and different song structures. Even the vocals are totally different. This time, it's more smooth singing rather than the folk-ish tellings of before. Musically, it's still all about catchy melodies. The sophomore disc from these young ones finds the band moving further into the poppiness that they only hinted at on Thirty Degrees Everywhere. Some things remain the same -- beautifully odd lyrics, extremely catchy and powerful music, and the overall feeling of sentimentality and imagination that the Promise Ring's music always seems to exude. With the momentum and energy of this band, we could see them heading for the indie-rock history books. ~ Blake Butler, All Music Guide

Right down to its neon cover, the Promise Ring's Electric Pink EP looks and sounds like pure sugary-sweet candy. Musically, it continues in the tradition of 1999's glorious indie pop epic Very Emergency and proves that there's no harm in too much of a good thing.
