The brainchild of singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal was among the second wave of bands to emerge from the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. A native of Athens, GA, Barnes was inspired to form the euphoric indie pop group in the wake of a broken romance with a woman from Montreal. He signed with Bar/None Records while living in Florida, subsequently moved to Cleveland and Minneapolis in search of compatible bandmates, and finally returned home to collaborate with bassist Bryan Helium (also a member of Athens' Elf Power) and drummer Derek Almstead...[more]

An interesting follow up to the highly engaging "Coqolicot" epic conceptual masterpiece, "Arboretum" lets Of Montreal remind us of their amazing ability to craft perfect rock songs. An album where each song is provocative and challenging but still danceable and easy to sing along with.

VINYL FORMAT. Pressed on high-quality 180gram vinyl! Housed in deluxe, double gatefold packaging. Comes with a digital download code. Originally released in 2002, Aldhils Arboretum was a departure for Of Montreal. Rather than building songs around concepts, the band chose to concentrate specifically on the development and writing of each song. Such an effort resulted in one of Of Montreal's most focused and polished works to date.

VINYL FORMAT. Pressed on high-quality 180gram vinyl! Originally released in 1998, Of Montreal's second full-length album features uncredited appearances by members of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Late B.P. Helium. The album was the first in which Of Montreal built characters around concepts. Although not as developed as later Of Montreal concept albums, The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy is infused with Vaudevillian elements that foreshadowed Of Montreal's break-out albums The Gay Parade and [ read more ]

A continuation and maturation of the playfulness exhibited on earlier releases, Of Montreal create the brand of theatrical psychedelic pop that many of their '60s predecessors hinted at but only few achieved. Overall less overtly rock-influenced than either Cherry Peel or Horse and Elephant Eatery, Kevin Barnes continues to change chords with nearly every word, twirling Vaudevillian melodies that incredibly bring to life all the whimsy and melancholy of the characters he carefully orchestr   [ read more ]

REISSUE. Athens' Of Montreal has seen a resurgent interest in their back catalog following the overwhelming success of their most recent two albums: Satanic Panic In The Attic and The Sunlandic Twins. This record isn't an EP but an 8-song mini album released shortly after the group's debut. The highlight is a cover of The Who's "Disguises", and the album serves as a foundation for which other Of Montreal full-lengths would manifest themselves. Priced as an affordable CD EP.

Hailing from the '90s-resurgent Athens, GA, scene, unofficial home base to the Elephant 6 collective, Of Montreal is perhaps the least publicized band in the Elephant 6 stable but not because they make the least-worthy music. This, Of Montreal's fourth album, was released in 2001. It's the band's most ambitious album with songs of wonderful madness featuring strange musical interludes, a detective story, gentle love songs, and avant pop songs, ending with an 18-minute piano opus.
