Minus the Bear

Fight!!!," and "Lemurs, Man, Lemurs," it's hard not to be at least a little bit curious about this Seattle-based quintet. The band comprised guitarist Dave Knudson, vocalist/ guitarist Jake Snider, drummer Erin Tate, and bassist Cory Murchy. Though the band entere...[more]

After a year of building a loyal pack of fans in their hometown of Seattle, as well as winning the hearts of new faces while touring in support of their EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic, the boys holed up in the studio this summer to record new music with Steve Fisk at the dials (Beat Happening, Pell Mell, Low, Three Mile Pilot). Three years removed from the riveting full-length debut, Highly Refined Pirates, this highly stylized Seattle indie-pop group flaunts substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop on their second Suicide Squeeze full-length. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush), '80s proto punks (Fugazi), and '90s art rock mind-fucks (Jawbox, Joan Of Arc), Minus The Bear invoke the modern love affair between dance driven strategy and lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. Minus The Bear's records are frequently steeped in atmospherics and peppered with some serious prog-rock tendencies. Their most recent full-length, Menos El Oso, was heavy on samples and their live set finds guitarist David Knudson playing his pedals more frequently than his guitar, hunkered over the side of the stage, syncopated and spastic. As the band transforms, this record achieves that rare remix goal of presenting an already esteemed record in an entirely new light.
